Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Amazon Basin of South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador. Inhabits the canopy of tropical rainforests near water bodies.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Member of the Hylidae family. Historically classified as Hyla leucophyllata.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly arboreal and nocturnal. Spends daylight hours resting flat on leaves to camouflage, emerging at night to hunt and call.
Morphology: Small frog, reaching 1 to 1.5 inches in length. Features a dark brown body with striking white or yellow geometric patches. Males are smaller and possess vocal sacs.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a vertically oriented enclosure (10-15 gallons minimum) decorated with broad-leafed plants like Pothos, branches, and vines.
Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures between 24-28°C. A low-strength UVB light is beneficial for natural behavior and plant vitality.
Humidity and Hydration: Keep humidity levels around 60-80% by misting daily with dechlorinated water. Provide a shallow, clean water dish.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Feed small live insects such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and bean beetles dusted with calcium.
Compatibility: Can be housed communally in small groups of the same species. Do not house with other amphibian species to prevent cross-contamination.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to skin infections from stagnant conditions. Ensure adequate ventilation in the terrarium.
