Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Philippines. Inhabits humid tropical forests near freshwater rivers, streams, and marshes, using the water as an escape route from predators.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Agamidae, genus Hydrosaurus. One of the largest and most specialized semi-aquatic agamid species in the world.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and semi-aquatic. Excellent swimmer and climber. Extremely shy in captivity, tending to bolt wildly into the water when startled.
Morphology: Reaches 90-120 cm (3-4 feet) in length. Males develop a large, erect skin crest (sail) supported by bony spines on the tail base, and blue-purple head markings.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a massive enclosure (minimum 200x100x180 cm / 6x3x6 feet). A large, heated, and filtered water pool for swimming is mandatory. Substrato should be moisture-retaining soil and bark.
Lighting and Heating: Basking spot at 40-45°C (104-113°F), with ambient temperatures of 28-32°C (82-90°F). High-output (10%+) UVB lighting is absolutely critical.
Humidity and Hydration: High humidity of 75-90%. Mist daily. Keeping the water pool pristine is crucial as they tend to defecate in the water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Omnivorous. Feed a variety of insects (roaches, crickets), greens, fruits, flowers, and occasional small fish. Dust food with calcium and multivitamins three times a week.
Compatibility: Males are highly territorial and will not tolerate other males. Can be kept in pairs or harems in very large enclosures.
Health and Common Diseases: Snout-rubbing injuries are very common if the lizard is startled or if the enclosure is too small. Susceptible to skin infections and internal parasites.
