Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widespread across North America, from northern Canada down to the southern United States. Inhabits marshes, ponds, damp meadows, and slow rivers.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Member of the Ranidae family. Well known for its powerful hind legs adapted for long-distance jumping.
Behavior and Habits: Semi-aquatic and diurnal. Forages on land but remains close to water bodies, diving under water instantly when startled.
Morphology: Green or brown coloration covered with round dark spots bordered by light rings. Females are typically larger than males.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a large semi-aquatic tank (20 gallons minimum) with a land area and a deep water area. Include live plants and caves for hiding.
Lighting and Heating: Thrives in cool conditions (18-22°C). Do not use heating lamps; room temperature is generally ideal for this cold-tolerant species.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain humidity between 50-70%. Dechlorinated water must be kept clean, as they easily absorb impurities through their skin.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Feed on live crickets, earthworms, and small roaches dusted with calcium and D3 supplements weekly.
Compatibility: Keep singly or in a matched pair. They are opportunistic feeders and will attempt to eat any tankmate small enough to fit in their mouth.
Health and Common Diseases: Red-leg disease and skin fungus. Ensure excellent water filtration and regular partial water changes.
