Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Amazon Basin, including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Lives in the humid leaf litter of lowland tropical rainforests.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Dendrobatidae, genus Ameerega. Commonly known as Hahnel's Poison Frog. Possesses skin toxins derived from wild diet.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and terrestrial. Very active during the day, constantly foraging on the forest floor for tiny invertebrates.
Morphology: Small size (2-2.5 cm). Blackish-brown body with white or yellow dorsolateral stripes and pinkish-yellow spots at joints. Females are slightly larger.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: A bioactive terrarium (minimum 45x45x45 cm) with natural soil, live moss, bromeliads, hiding spots, and a generous layer of leaf litter.
Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures at 22-26 °C. Avoid high temperatures above 27 °C. Use low-output UVB bulb on a 12-hour timer.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high relative humidity (75-90%) with daily misting using RO water. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feed daily with tiny live prey: wingless fruit flies (Drosophila), springtails, and pinhead crickets dusted with calcium/D3.
Compatibility: Housed in pairs or trios. Do not mix with different poison frog species to prevent territorial fight or cross-breeding.
Health and Common Diseases: High risk of desiccation if misting is neglected. Captive-bred specimens do not produce toxins due to lack of wild ant diet.
