Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the arid regions of Western Asia, primarily found in Iran, southern Pakistan, and southern Afghanistan. It inhabits hot sandy deserts, shifting sand dunes, and saline flats with minimal vegetation. They are strictly fossorial, digging deep, vertical burrows into the damp layers of sand beneath the surface to escape the extreme heat of the day.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the class Reptilia, order Squamata, family Sphaerodactylidae, and genus Teratoscincus. Described by Strauch in 1863. Long classified as a subspecies of Teratoscincus scincus, it was elevated to species status based on genetic and morphological analyses showing distinct karyological patterns and scale structures.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly nocturnal and highly territorial. They spend their days in deep, self-dug damp burrows, emerging at night to hunt. They possess extremely fragile skin that easily tears away as a defense mechanism to escape predators (integumentary autotomy). When threatened, they stand high on their legs and wag their tail, rubbing the large plates together to produce a loud, defensive hissing sound.
Morphology: The largest member of its genus, reaching a total length of 18-20 cm (7-8 inches). It features a robust head with very large, dark eyes adapted for night vision. The body is covered in thin, overlapping, fish-like scales that give it a unique appearance. The coloration is sandy-yellow to golden-orange with dark transverse bands and bright yellow flanks.

Terrarium Setup: An enclosure measuring at least 80x40x40 cm (32x16x16 inches) is required for a single adult. The substrate is critical: provide a 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) deep layer of fine play sand. The bottom layer of sand must be kept damp to allow the gecko to construct stable burrows, while the surface remains dry.
Lighting and Heating: Requires high daytime temperatures. Set up a thermal gradient with a cool zone at 26-28°C (79-82°F) and a warm basking spot reaching 38-40°C (100-104°F) using an overhead heat source. Nighttime temperatures should drop to 20-22°C (68-72°F). Install a 5.0 UVB bulb on a 10-12 hour cycle.
Humidity and Hydration: Although they live in deserts, subterranean humidity is vital. Maintain a moist retreat by spraying the lower levels of sand or providing a hide box filled with damp peat moss or sphagnum. Offer a shallow water dish, though they will occasionally lick droplets from local evening mistings.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous diet. Feed a variety of live insects, including crickets, dubia roaches, locusts, and occasional mealworms. Dust all feeder insects with pure calcium carbonate at every feeding for juveniles and three times a week for adults, adding vitamin D3 once weekly.
Compatibility: Exceptionally territorial. Males will fight to the death and must never be housed together. Keeping pairs is also risky due to aggressive breeding bites and territorial disputes. Single housing is strongly recommended to prevent severe stress and physical injury.
Health and Common Diseases: Never grab this gecko by hand; its skin tears easily, leaving large, painful wounds that are prone to infection. Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) is common without proper calcium/D3. Impaction can occur if sand is accidentally ingested due to calcium deficiency or dehydration.
