Geographical Origin and Habitat: The northern sand gecko is native to North Africa, with a distribution range that covers large areas of the Sahara Desert, including Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, and Mali. It inhabits extremely arid desert environments, dry sandy plains, rocky gravel deserts, and dry riverbeds (wadis). During the hot daylight hours, it seeks refuge under flat stones, inside rock crevices, or by burrowing into the cooler, damp sand layers below the surface.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Gekkonidae, subfamily Gekkoninae, classified under the genus Tropiocolotes. These lizards are commonly referred to as dwarf sand geckos or pygmy geckos due to their miniature size. Several localized subspecies are recognized based on geographic variations. Genetically, they possess highly specialized physiological adaptations designed for survival in extreme hyper-arid desert environments.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly terrestrial, nocturnal, and crepuscular. They remain hidden in warm retreats during the day to prevent water loss and emerge after dusk when temperatures drop to actively hunt small insect prey. They move with quick, darting steps. Despite their fragile size, they are highly skilled nocturnal hunters that rely on their large, sensitive eyes to spot microscopic invertebrates.
Morphology: One of the smallest gecko species in the world, reaching a maximum adult length of only 5 to 6 centimeters, including the tail. The body is slender and covered with small scales, displaying a semi-translucent skin. The base color ranges from sandy yellow to light beige or tan, marked with dark brown crossbands for camouflage. They have large eyes with vertical pupils and clawed digits without adhesive pads.

Terrarium Setup: A small terrarium measuring 45x30x30 cm is sufficient to house a small colony of 3 to 4 individuals. The substrate must consist of fine desert sand (calcium-free) at least 5 cm deep to support burrowing. Incorporate secure flat rocks, slate plates, and small terracotta caves to replicate the rocky crevices and safe hiding spots of their natural habitat.
Lighting and Heating: Requires high daytime temperatures to replicate desert conditions. Establish a localized basking spot of 35-38 °C using a heating bulb, with ambient daytime temperatures of 26-30 °C and a night drop to 20-22 °C. Although nocturnal, a low-output UVB bulb (2.0 or 5.0) active during the day is highly recommended to aid vitamin D3 synthesis.
Humidity and Hydration: The general air humidity must be kept very low. However, you must provide a humid hideout filled with damp moss or coconut fiber to prevent dehydration and assist with shedding. Lightly spray one corner of the enclosure once or twice a week, allowing the geckos to lick water droplets off the rocks and glass walls.
Feeding and Supplementation: Due to their extremely small size, they must only be fed live micro-insects. Suitable prey includes fruit flies (Drosophila), pinhead crickets, micro-roaches, and springtails. Dust all prey items with pure calcium three times a week, and use calcium + D3 weekly to prevent nutritional deficiencies and support skeletal health.
Compatibility: Can be housed in small groups consisting of one male and multiple females. Males are territorial and must never be housed together in the same enclosure to prevent territorial fighting. Because of their tiny size and extreme physical fragility, they must never be housed with larger reptile or amphibian species.
Health and Common Diseases: Dehydration is a major risk if a damp hide is not provided, and incomplete shedding (especially on their toes) can restrict blood flow and lead to digit loss. Inadequate calcium intake and lack of UVB light will quickly cause Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). Handling should be kept to a minimum to avoid skin tearing.
