Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Phelsuma lineata, commonly known as the Lined Day Gecko, is a small saurian reptile endemic to Madagascar. The species is widely distributed throughout the eastern, northern, and central parts of the island. It primarily inhabits tropical rainforests, degraded forest edges, domestic gardens, and agricultural plantations. It is highly adapted to living on large broad-leafed plants such as palms, banana trees, and bamboo, at altitudes ranging from sea level up to 1500 meters.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Gekkonidae, genus Phelsuma (day geckos). It includes several recognized subspecies (such as Phelsuma lineata lineata, Phelsuma lineata bombetokensis, and Phelsuma lineata elanthana) which exhibit slight variations in coloration and body measurements. The genetics are stable but subject to localized speciation due to the island's complex topography.
Behavior and Habits: It is a strictly diurnal gecko, highly active and an agile climber. It spends daylight hours hunting insects and basking under the sun to thermoregulate. Possessing strongly arboreal habits, it is highly territorial. Males vigorously defend their territories from rival males, engaging in head bobbing displays, vocalizations, and ritualized combat.
Morphology: Features a slender, elongated body that can reach a total length of 10 to 14 centimeters (including the tail). The skin is smooth and covered with microscopic scales. It possesses adhesive lamellae (setae) beneath its toes, allowing it to climb smooth vertical surfaces, including glass, with ease. The pupil is round, which is typical for diurnal geckos.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a vertically oriented forest terrarium (minimum size 45x45x60 cm for a pair). The substrate should consist of coconut fiber, peat moss, or fine pine bark to maintain humidity. The interior must be densely furnished with vertical and diagonal bamboo stalks, branches, and broad-leafed live plants like Sansevieria, Pothos, or bromeliads to provide climbing surfaces and hiding spots.
Lighting and Heating: Being diurnal, it requires high-quality UVB lighting (5% or 6% UVB tubes) active for 12 hours a day, which is essential for vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium absorption. Heating should include a warm basking zone of 28-30°C created by a spot lamp, an ambient temperature of 24-26°C, and a night-time drop to 18-20°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Demands daytime humidity levels between 60% and 70%, with a night-time spike of 80-90%. This is achieved by misting the terrarium with purified water once or twice daily (morning and evening). The gecko hydrates itself primarily by drinking water droplets that collect on the leaves and glass walls after misting.
Feeding and Supplementation: The diet must be varied and balanced, consisting of appropriately sized live insects (crickets, roaches, fruit flies) and supplemented weekly with fresh fruit puree or commercial powdered diets formulated for frugivorous geckos (Pangea or Repashy). Dust prey with calcium and vitamin D3 twice a week for growing juveniles and breeding females.
Compatibility: Males are extremely territorial and aggressive toward one another: they must NEVER be housed together in the same terrarium. It is best to keep a single specimen or a well-matched male-female pair. This species is not suitable for regular handling, as their skin is extremely delicate and tears easily if grabbed.
Health and Common Diseases: The most common health issue is MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) caused by insufficient UVB exposure or a lack of calcium in the diet, leading to bone deformities and weakness. Respiratory infections can occur in cases of poor ventilation combined with stagnant humidity. Retained sheds (dysecdysis) indicate that humidity levels are too low.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Omnivore
- The Lined Day Gecko sustains itself on a mixed diet consisting of small insects, fruit nectars, and pollen. They actively forage during the daylight hours for small flies, mosquitoes, and plant sap to meet their energy needs. In a terrarium environment, they readily accept commercial fruit mixes alongside regular feedings of small, gut-loaded crickets and fruit flies.
- Expectativa de vida
- 10-15 years
- Tamanho adulto

- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Arboreal
- Arboreal. They utilize smooth branches, bamboo, and broad leaves to climb quickly and navigate their vertical environments.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- Diurnal and highly active during the day, spending their time basking under UV light and foraging for insects and fruit nectars.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- Agile and quick, Lined Day Geckos are diurnal lizards that spend their time climbing smooth foliage and basking in warm sunlight. They are relatively timid compared to larger day geckos and prefer to flee quickly into dense vegetation when approached. Males are territorial and will communicate through subtle body movements, head-bobbing, and vocalizations to maintain their personal space.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Breeding pairs mate multiple times throughout the warm, wet season, with females depositing pairs of eggs in hidden, secure locations. The eggs are often attached to the inside of bamboo stalks or tucked deeply into plant axils to protect them from predators. Upon hatching, the tiny, brightly colored juveniles are highly active and instinctively seek out small insect prey.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Display species. Handling causes severe stress, and their skin is incredibly delicate and prone to tearing when grasped.
- Brumação
- Brumation is not needed. A slight drop in temperature can be provided in winter, but tropical parameters should generally remain consistent.
- Muda
- Periodic
- They undergo shedding very quickly and will consume the skin. A humid environment is vital to ensure the shed comes off without restriction.
