Scorpion-tailed Gecko
Pristurus carteri
An unusual diurnal desert gecko from the Arabian Peninsula, famously known for waving its tail like a scorpion. Needs a horizontal, dry setup (45x30x30 cm) with fine sand, strong UVB, and basking spots up to 35°C.

Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Arabian Peninsula, specifically the arid, rocky coastal regions of Oman, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. It inhabits rocky outcrops and gravel deserts.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Sphaerodactylidae, genus Pristurus. A unique group of diurnal terrestrial geckos adapted to desert environments.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal. Communicates with conspecifics by waving and curling its tail over its back like a scorpion to signal territoriality.
Morphology: Reaches 6-9 cm (2.5-3.5 inches) in total length. Features a large head relative to the body, large diurnal eyes, a beige/grey base color with pale dots, and a laterally compressed tail. The dorsal scales are tuberculated and non-overlapping, providing a rough texture adapted to retain morning moisture. The genetics of this species reveal a unique adaptation for diurnal thermoregulation in hyper-arid environments.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a horizontal desert setup (minimum 18x12x12 inches / 45x30x30 cm). Use a fine sand substrate and stack flat rocks safely for basking and hiding.
Lighting and Heating: Basking spot temperature of 32-35°C (90-95°F), warm side ambient of 26-28°C (79-82°F), and night drop to 18-20°C (64-68°F). A T5 HO 10% UVB bulb is highly recommended.
Humidity and Hydration: Keep very dry (20-40% humidity). Provide a shallow, small water dish. Avoid high humidity.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Feed appropriately sized small insects (pinhead crickets, fruit flies, small roaches). Dust prey with calcium powder twice a week.
Compatibility: Territorial. Males will fight and must not be housed together. Can be kept in pairs or small harems (one male, multiple females) in suitable tanks.
Health and Common Diseases: Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) is a risk without calcium and UVB. Damp conditions will lead to skin fungal infections. Provide rough branches and flat stones to allow the gecko to rub against during shedding, preventing painful skin retention. Do not be alarmed by the tail-waving behavior, which is entirely natural and indicates active communication.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- This species is strictly insectivorous and relies on a varied diet of live insects. Offer appropriately sized crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms to ensure proper nutrition. All feeder insects should be gut-loaded and regularly dusted with calcium and multivitamin supplements.
- Tamanho adulto
- 8 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- This rock-dwelling species thrives in environments with abundant rocky outcrops and crevices. They use tight spaces between stones to feel secure and to wedge themselves away from predators. The enclosure should feature securely stacked rocks that provide plenty of climbing and hiding opportunities.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- This species is strictly diurnal, meaning it is highly active during the daylight hours. It requires intense full-spectrum UVB lighting and a proper basking spot to regulate its metabolism. During the night, it will retreat to a secure hide to sleep in complete darkness.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- This species tends to be skittish and fast-moving, often relying on flight to escape perceived threats. They generally prefer to be left alone and can become easily stressed by sudden movements. It is best to appreciate their active behaviors from a distance as a display animal.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species reproduces by laying eggs, which require specific conditions to hatch successfully. Females will seek out a suitable nesting site with moist substrate to deposit their clutch. Eggs must be carefully removed and incubated at the correct temperature and humidity levels.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Due to their fragile nature and fast speed, handling should be kept to an absolute minimum. They are best treated as display animals, as handling can cause severe stress or physical injury. If movement is necessary, coaxing them into a container is the safest method.
- Brumação
- This tropical species does not undergo true brumation and requires consistent temperatures year-round. While they may show a slight decrease in activity during winter, their enclosure parameters should not be drastically altered. Heating and lighting must be maintained at standard levels to ensure their health.
- Muda
- Regular
- Like most lizards, this species sheds its skin in patches rather than in one continuous piece. Maintaining proper humidity levels and providing a humid hide are crucial to prevent stuck shed. Keepers should monitor the toes and tail tip closely to ensure all old skin is successfully removed.
