Egyptian Mastigure
Uromastyx aegyptia
The largest species in the genus Uromastyx, native to the Middle Eastern deserts. A herbivorous and burrowing reptile, it requires huge enclosures with exceptionally high temperatures and very low humidity.

Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Inhabits the arid deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, particularly the Arabian Peninsula. It lives on hard gravelly plains and sandy deserts, digging deep burrow systems that can extend for several meters.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Agamidae and the genus Uromastyx. It is the largest representative of the genus, showing genetic adaptations for extreme arid survival and processing high-fiber vegetation.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly diurnal, terrestrial, and highly xerophilic. It spends mornings basking to absorb heat. When threatened, it retreats tail-first into its burrow, using its heavily spiked tail as a defensive shield.
Morphology: The largest Uromastyx species, reaching lengths of 60-75 cm and weights of 2-3 kg. It features a heavy, flattened body, a blunt head, and a thick, spiked tail. Skin color changes dynamically from dark grey (cold) to light beige/yellowish (warm).
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a massive horizontal enclosure (minimum 180x60x60 cm). The substrate must be a deep (20+ cm) sand-clay mix to support burrowing. Provide large, heavy, secure rock structures and caves.
Lighting and Heating: Requires extreme desert heat. The basking spot must reach 45-55°C (113-131°F), with ambient temperatures of 32-35°C (90-95°F) and a night drop to 20-22°C (68-72°F). Very strong 12-14% UVB or metal halide lighting is mandatory.
Humidity and Hydration: Extremely low humidity (10-30%). Never mist the enclosure, as high humidity can cause fatal respiratory and skin issues. They obtain water from their food; a water bowl is generally not needed.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly herbivorous. Feed leafy greens (dandelion, mustard greens, endive), edible flowers, and dry seeds/legumes (lentils, millet, split peas). Dust food with calcium twice a week and multivitamins weekly.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Highly territorial towards conspecifics. Housing them individually is strongly recommended to prevent severe territorial aggression and chronic stress.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly susceptible to tail rot and respiratory infections if exposed to humid air. Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) can occur if UVB lighting is insufficient. Kidney disease/bladder stones can result from improper diets.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Herbivore
- This species is primarily herbivorous and requires a diet rich in fresh greens and vegetables. Provide a daily salad consisting of dark leafy greens, squash, and occasional fruit treats. Dusting the meals with a calcium supplement is essential to prevent metabolic bone disease.
- Tamanho adulto
- 75 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- This species leads a terrestrial lifestyle, spending the vast majority of its time on the ground. Its enclosure should prioritize floor space over height, featuring a deep substrate for digging. Providing various ground-level hides and rocks will encourage natural foraging behaviors.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- This species is strictly diurnal, meaning it is highly active during the daylight hours. It requires intense full-spectrum UVB lighting and a proper basking spot to regulate its metabolism. During the night, it will retreat to a secure hide to sleep in complete darkness.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- This reptile is known for its relatively docile and calm demeanor when properly acclimated. While they may be slightly skittish initially, they tend to settle down with consistent, gentle interactions. They make excellent subjects for observation and occasional interaction.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species reproduces by laying eggs, which require specific conditions to hatch successfully. Females will seek out a suitable nesting site with moist substrate to deposit their clutch. Eggs must be carefully removed and incubated at the correct temperature and humidity levels.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Expert only
- This species is generally tolerant of handling once it has become accustomed to its keeper. Interactions should be kept brief and positive to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Always support their body fully and allow them to walk freely on your hands.
- Brumação
- In the wild, this species undergoes a period of brumation during the cooler winter months. In captivity, healthy adults can be safely cooled to simulate this natural resting phase. During this time, they will eat less and remain largely inactive until temperatures are raised.
- Muda
- Regular
- Like most lizards, this species sheds its skin in patches rather than in one continuous piece. Maintaining proper humidity levels and providing a humid hide are crucial to prevent stuck shed. Keepers should monitor the toes and tail tip closely to ensure all old skin is successfully removed.
