Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Pseudochromis dixurus is native to the western Indian Ocean, with stable populations in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It inhabits deeper rocky reefs and steep slopes at depths typically between 15 and 50 meters, preferring shaded areas under ledges, caves, and overhangs exposed to active currents.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Pseudochromidae. The key morphological feature of this species is its deeply forked caudal fin with elongated lobes, a distinctive trait that is uncommon among other Pseudochromis species. Adults can reach a maximum length of about 8 to 9 centimeters.
Social Behavior: Like most dottybacks, it exhibits a highly territorial and semi-aggressive temperament. It is a solitary cave dweller that continuously patrols its territory, defending it vigorously against conspecifics and other bottom-dwelling fish that venture too close to its retreat.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body coloration is primarily a greyish-blue or slate-blue, transitioning to a light yellow or orange hue toward the posterior region and caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, though adult males may possess slightly longer caudal fin lobes and display brighter coloration during spawning rituals.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 100 liters. The tank layout must include a complex arrangement of live rock to create numerous caves, tunnels, and crevices. Rocks should be securely stacked to prevent shifts and create distinct territories. A substrate of sand and coral rubble is preferred.
Diet and Feeding: A carnivore. It requires a diet consisting of frozen and fresh foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and lobster eggs. While it may accept high-quality dry flake or pellet food, its primary diet should remain frozen to maintain its vibrant colors and health.
Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters: water temperature between 23 and 26 °C, pH levels of 8.1 to 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Regular water changes and a reliable protein skimmer are essential to prevent the accumulation of nitrates and other organic waste.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Semi-aggressive. It should not be housed with other dottybacks unless the tank is exceptionally large. Avoid keeping it with small, peaceful tankmates like firefish, sand gobies, or pipefish. Introduce it as one of the last fish to a community tank populated by active, robust species.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is possible but challenging. The male lures the female into his cave where she deposits a sticky ball of eggs. The male then fertilizes and guards the nest until hatching. Rearing the pelagic larvae requires specialized live feeds such as rotifers.
Risks and Diseases: This fish is a skilled jumper and will leap from open aquariums if startled; a tight-fitting cover is mandatory. It is susceptible to marine parasites like Cryptocaryon (marine ich) and Amyloodinium if stressed. Providing vitamin-enriched foods will boost its immune defense.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Aggressive
- This species exhibits a bold, feisty, and aggressive temperament. They are highly territorial and will actively defend their area against much larger fish. Their assertive nature means they need carefully chosen tank mates, but they are fascinating to watch as they patrol their domain.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- Their diet must consist entirely of high-protein, meaty marine foods. Offer a varied mix of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood to ensure they get the necessary nutrients. While they will eat high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods should remain their primary food source.
- Expectativa de vida
- 5-7 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 9 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Solitary
- Due to intense conspecific aggression, it is vital to keep them as single specimens. Housing two individuals together, regardless of sex, will almost always result in a fatal conflict. Attempting to keep a pair should only be done if they are already bonded and in a very large tank.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- To support their high energy levels and fast metabolism, they need to be fed two to three times daily. Providing small, frequent meals helps keep their aggression slightly lower and ensures they remain healthy. Always observe feeding time to verify they are eating and not just hoarding food.
- Carga biológica
- Low to Medium
- The bioload contribution of this species is moderate but requires attention due to their carnivorous diet. The meaty foods they consume can quickly degrade water quality if uneaten portions are left to rot. A high-quality protein skimmer and regular water changes are essential for maintaining a pristine environment.
- Fluxo
- Strong
- They prefer moderate to strong water flow that mimics the surge of their natural reef habitat. Adequate flow keeps the tank oxygenated and stimulates their natural swimming and hunting behaviors. They will utilize the calmer areas within the rockwork when they need to rest.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- Like all dottybacks, they are incredibly prone to jumping out of the aquarium. A tight-fitting, secure lid or a fine mesh screen is an absolute necessity to prevent them from leaping to their death. Extra caution should be taken during tank maintenance when they might be startled.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Captive breeding is very difficult but has been achieved by dedicated aquarists. They are demersal spawners; the female lays eggs in a secure cave, and the male vigorously guards and tends to them. Rearing the microscopic larvae requires specialized live foods, such as rotifers, making it a demanding task.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Reef safe
- They are quite aggressive and highly territorial, making them poor tank mates for shy or peaceful species. They will fiercely defend their chosen rocky home against intruders, often nipping fins. They should only be kept with larger, robust fish like tangs or large angelfish that will not be bullied.
- Nível do tanque
- Middle/Bottom
- They are heavily dependent on the rockwork and predominantly inhabit the lower to middle levels of the aquarium. They establish a territory around a specific cave or crevice and rarely stray far from it. They do not naturally swim in the open, upper areas of the water column.
