Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the tropical waters of the Western Pacific Ocean, with well-documented populations in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. It inhabits sheltered sandy lagoons, silty bays, and shallow outer reef slopes at depths ranging from 2 to 20 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: A member of the Gobiidae family in the genus Amblyeleotris. The species name 'macronema' derives from Greek, meaning 'long filament', referring to the elongated third spine of the first dorsal fin. Adults grow to an average maximum length of 10 to 12 centimeters, featuring a cylindrical body.
Social Behavior: A symbiotic species that shares an underground burrow with snapping shrimps from the genus Alpheus (such as Alpheus bellulus). The goby acts as a visual sentinel at the entrance, keeping constant physical contact with the shrimp's antennae. It warns the nearly blind shrimp of predators via tail flicks.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body color is light sandy-grey or pale beige, crossed by 4 or 5 prominent dark reddish-brown vertical bands. The head and body are decorated with iridescent blue spots and markings. The distinguishing feature is the long, dark, whip-like filament extending from the first dorsal fin.

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 100 liters (26 gallons). The bottom must have a deep layer of fine sand mixed with small shell fragments (at least 6-8 cm / 2.5-3 inches deep) to allow the goby and shrimp to construct their burrow. Place all heavy rocks directly on the bottom glass to prevent collapses. A tight cover is essential.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. In captivity, they feed on frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and small pellets. Food must be offered near the burrow entrance, as they rarely venture far. If kept with its symbiotic shrimp, the shrimp will feed on the scraps left by the goby.
Water Quality: Maintain stable parameters: temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. It requires standard biological filtration with a low to moderate current near the substrate to prevent the water flow from constantly collapsing the sandy entrance of their burrow.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef-safe. Ideal for reef tanks. Cohabitation with a symbiotic Alpheus pistol shrimp is highly recommended to observe their mutualistic relationship. Compatible with small, peaceful reef fish; avoid housing them with large, aggressive, or predatory species that may swallow them.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawning takes place inside the sandy burrow, where adhesive eggs are attached to the walls and guarded by the parental pair. Successful captive breeding and larval rearing in home aquariums are extremely rare due to the microscopic size of the larvae and their need for specialized live feeds.
Risks and Diseases: High risk of jumping out of the tank if startled by sudden lights or movements. They are also sensitive to skin infections if the sand bed becomes dirty or compacted. Ensure the rockwork is firmly secured to prevent cave-ins from the shrimp's continuous excavation work.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Territorial
- The Amblyeleotris macronema possesses a generally peaceful yet somewhat timid and cautious temperament. It relies completely on its burrow as a safe haven, retreating instantly at any sign of perceived danger. In the wild and in captivity, it acts as the vigilant lookout while its visually impaired shrimp partner maintains their shared home.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- In its natural habitat, the Amblyeleotris macronema functions as a micro-predator, consuming benthic invertebrates and passing zooplankton. Captive specimens typically adapt quickly to a carnivorous diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and sinking micropellets. Ensuring that food reaches the lower levels of the aquarium is essential for their long-term nutritional health.
- Expectativa de vida
- 5-7 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 12 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Pair
- It is generally advisable to keep the Amblyeleotris macronema singly unless you can acquire a confirmed mated pair. Attempting to house two males or incompatible individuals in the same tank often leads to severe territorial disputes. A harmonious pair will usually share a single burrow and collaborate with the same pistol shrimp.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- To support their metabolic needs, the Amblyeleotris macronema should be offered small meals one to two times daily. Frequent, appropriately sized feedings are far more beneficial than infrequent large meals. Target feeding near the entrance of their burrow often yields the best results and ensures they outcompete faster tank mates.
- Carga biológica
- Low to Medium
- The Amblyeleotris macronema has a minimal bioload, making it an excellent candidate for reef aquariums of various sizes. Because of its small physical stature and efficient metabolism, it contributes very little waste to the water column. This characteristic helps aquarists maintain pristine water parameters without putting undue stress on biological filtration systems.
- Fluxo
- Strong
- The Amblyeleotris macronema strongly prefers areas of the tank with low to moderate water flow. Gentle currents allow them to hover comfortably above the substrate without expending excessive energy. Furthermore, calmer water facilitates clear tactile communication with their symbiotic shrimp partner.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- Like most members of its genus, the Amblyeleotris macronema presents a significant risk of jumping out of an open aquarium. Startling events, such as abrupt lighting changes or aggressive encounters, can trigger a panic response. A tight-fitting lid or a specialized mesh screen is a mandatory requirement to prevent loss of life.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- The Amblyeleotris macronema is a demersal spawner, carefully depositing its eggs within the protected confines of its substrate burrow. After fertilization, the male typically assumes the role of guarding the clutch until the fry hatch. While captive breeding is quite rare in home aquaria, it can sometimes be achieved in dedicated breeding setups with pristine conditions.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Community
- This goby exhibits a highly peaceful demeanor and thrives in community setups alongside other tranquil fish. The Amblyeleotris macronema is particularly prized for its ability to form a fascinating mutualistic bond with alpheid pistol shrimp. It is imperative to avoid housing them with large, boisterous, or predatory tank mates that could intimidate or consume them.
- Nível do tanque
- Bottom
- As a dedicated benthic species, the Amblyeleotris macronema spends the vast majority of its life resting directly on or hovering slightly above the substrate. They establish their territory around a primary burrow entrance and rarely venture into the middle or upper water column. Providing a deep bed of fine or mixed-grade sand is crucial to support their natural behaviors.
