Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Amblyeleotris melanocephala, commonly known as the blackhead shrimpgoby, is native to the Western Indo-Pacific, with populations recorded from the Ryukyu Islands in Japan to Indonesia and the Philippines. It inhabits deep sandy and muddy slopes adjacent to coral reefs, typically at depths of 15 to 40 meters where fine sediments gather.
Taxonomy and Morphology: It belongs to the family Gobiidae. It features an elongated, sub-cylindrical body with a robust head and eyes set high on top. The primary morphological feature is the dark coloration of the head. Adults reach a maximum length of about 8-9 centimeters, making them suitable for small to medium-sized marine aquariums.
Social Behavior: This fish lives in a mutualistic symbiosis with snapping shrimps of the genus Alpheus. The pair shares a burrow dug in the sand by the shrimp. The goby acts as a watchful guardian at the entrance, alerting the blind shrimp of danger via tail vibrations. It is territorial towards conspecifics and other bottom dwellers.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body color is creamy-white with light yellow or orange vertical bands, contrasting sharply with the head which is dark brown or charcoal black. The fins are transparent or decorated with small iridescent dots. There is no externally visible sexual dimorphism between males and females.

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 80 liters with a fine sand bed of at least 6-8 cm in depth. The substrate should include shell fragments and small rubble to allow the shrimp to build stable tunnels. Place the live rock directly on the glass bottom of the tank to prevent rock collapses caused by the shrimp's burrowing activities.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous diet. In the wild, it feeds on small planktonic organisms. In the aquarium, it readily accepts frozen food such as mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely minced clam or shrimp meat. It is recommended to feed small portions multiple times a day directly near the entrance of their burrow.
Water Quality: Maintain stable and clean water parameters: temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity 1.020-1.025. It is important to ensure good oxygenation and efficient filtration. Avoid strong water currents at the substrate level to prevent the constant collapse of the entrance of the shrimp's burrow.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: It is a very peaceful fish that does not bother corals or other reef invertebrates. It can coexist with a wide variety of peaceful marine fish that occupy the upper water column. Avoid keeping it with large predators or aggressive benthic fish that might compete for the burrow or attack the symbiotic shrimp.
Aquarium Breeding: Reproduction in the home aquarium is extremely difficult and is not commonly achieved. Spawning occurs inside the tunnel system dug by the shrimp, where the female attaches the eggs. The male guards the nest. Raising the planktonic larvae is the main challenge and requires live rotifer cultures.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is the fish jumping out of the aquarium, especially when startled or during the initial acclimation period, so a secure lid is essential. Additionally, starvation can occur if the tank contains fast, voracious feeders that consume all the food before it can reach the bottom area of the tank.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Peaceful
- It is a peaceful, shy, and cautious fish that prefers to stay close to the safety of its established burrow. While it will bravely defend its immediate territory from other bottom-dwellers, it ignores fish swimming higher up. Providing plenty of rubble and a quiet environment helps it feel secure and behave naturally.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- As a micro-predator, its natural diet consists mostly of tiny benthic crustaceans and zooplankton found near the substrate. In captivity, it eagerly accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and sinking carnivore pellets. Providing a varied, high-quality meaty diet is critical for maintaining its health and vibrant coloration.
- Expectativa de vida
- 5-8 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 8.5 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Flexible
- There are no obvious external differences between males and females, making sexing this species visually almost impossible. They are best kept singly or as a confirmed mated pair to avoid territorial disputes. Placing multiple unsexed individuals in a small tank usually leads to aggressive territorial battles over burrow sites.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- Feeding small portions two to three times daily is recommended to mimic its natural, continuous foraging behavior. Because it rarely ventures far from its burrow, targeted feeding near its home may be necessary in a busy tank. Care should be taken to ensure it gets enough food without overfeeding the entire system.
- Carga biológica
- Low to Medium
- This species has a minimal impact on the overall bioload of the aquarium due to its small size and sedentary lifestyle. It produces very little waste compared to more active, open-water swimmers. Routine maintenance and standard filtration are entirely sufficient to keep the water pristine.
- Fluxo
- Moderate
- Amblyeleotris melanocephala needs steady, moderate circulation distributed across the aquarium rather than a narrow, forceful jet. Requires a tank of at least 80 liters with a fine sand bed of at least 6-8 cm in depth. The substrate should include shell fragments and small rubble to allow the shrimp to build stable tunnels. This preserves useful water exchange while retaining calmer shelter for rest and feeding.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- Like most gobies, this fish is easily spooked and possesses a strong instinct to jump when frightened or chased. A tight-fitting lid or a fine mesh cover is absolutely necessary to prevent it from leaping out of the aquarium. Keeping it in an open-top tank is highly risky and often ends poorly.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Captive breeding of this species is extremely rare and technically demanding, primarily due to the difficulty of raising its microscopic pelagic larvae. In their natural habitat, they are substrate spawners that lay adhesive eggs deep within the safety of their burrow. The male takes on the responsibility of guarding and oxygenating the eggs until they hatch.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Peaceful
- It is a fantastic community fish for peaceful reef aquariums, coexisting easily with corals and small, non-aggressive tank mates. This fish forms a fascinating symbiotic bond with pistol shrimp, which provides an incredible behavioral display. Large or predatory fish must be avoided, as they will easily consume this small goby.
- Nível do tanque
- Bottom
- This bottom-dwelling fish spends the vast majority of its life resting on the sand bed or hovering just outside its burrow. It relies heavily on a deep sand substrate to create its home alongside its symbiotic shrimp partner. It will only dart higher into the water column momentarily to grab a passing morsel of food.
