Geographical Origin and Habitat: Platax pinnatus, also known as the Pinnate Spadefish or Pinnatus Batfish, is widely distributed throughout the tropical Western Pacific. It ranges from the Ryukyu Islands of Japan down to northern Australia and across the Indo-Malayan Archipelago. Juveniles inhabit shallow, sheltered coastal reefs, mangroves, and caves, while adults dwell in deeper outer reef slopes.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Ephippidae and genus Platax, this fish undergo a drastic morphological transformation. Juveniles are jet-black with extremely tall, wing-like dorsal and anal fins outlined in vibrant neon orange. As they mature, they lose this shape and color, transition into a disc-shaped silver-grey body with much shorter, rounded fins.
Social Behavior: Juveniles are highly cryptic, mimicking toxic flatworms by swimming with a fluttering motion close to the substrate or inside caves. Adults are pelagic and open-water swimmers, often forming small schools. In the aquarium, they are slow-moving, peaceful, and easily stressed by fast-swimming or assertive tankmates.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The striking juvenile coloration is coal-black with a continuous brilliant orange border around the entire body silhouette. Adults fade to a dull silver-grey with faint vertical dark bars. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism; males and females look identical throughout all life stages.

Aquarium Setup: An enormous tank is mandatory for this species. While juveniles can start in smaller quarantine tanks, adults require a minimum tank volume of 200-250 gallons (800-1000 liters) with a height of at least 30-36 inches (75-90 cm) to accommodate their tall profile. The aquarium layout must prioritize open swimming area with minimal sharp rocks.
Diet and Feeding: The greatest challenge in keeping this species is feeding. Juveniles are notorious for refusing to eat in captivity. Offering live foods like brine shrimp or copepods, followed by fresh seafood pastes, mysis, and chopped clams, is essential. Adults are omnivorous and will eat anemones, zoanthids, and soft corals, making them unsafe for reef tanks.
Water Quality: Pristine, highly oxygenated water is required. Maintain temperatures of 75-81 °F (24-27 °C), pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and salinity at 1.020-1.025. Batfish are sensitive to poor water conditions and high nitrates. A high-turnover filtration system, robust protein skimmer, and regular carbon filtration are essential to maintain water purity.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Adults are not reef-safe as they will graze on corals and sessile invertebrates. Choose very peaceful, slow-moving tankmates. Do not house them with fin-nipping species like pufferfish, triggerfish, or aggressive damselfish, which will shred the batfish's long, delicate fins and induce fatal stress.
Aquarium Breeding: Captive breeding has not been successfully achieved in home aquariums due to the massive physical space required for courtship and spawning. Breeding is limited to specialized public aquariums or large-scale commercial aquaculture facilities utilizing hormone induction.
Risks and Diseases: This species has an extremely low survival rate in captivity, primarily due to starvation, shipping stress, and disease.
