Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Central America and northern South America. Inhabits dark, warm, and humid environments like caves, hollow trees, and damp tropical forest leaf litter.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Blaberidae. Considered a key species in forest ecosystems for recycling organic plant and animal matter.

Behavior and Habits: Nocturnal and gregarious. Spends daylight hours clustered in dark retreats or under foliage, emerging at night to forage in groups.

Morphology: Adults reach 7.5-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length with a wingspan up to 15 cm. Flattened light brown body with a distinctive dark shield pattern on the pronotum. Nymphs are wingless.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Terrarium Setup: A spacious enclosure (minimum 45x30x30 cm for a small colony). Use a substrate of coconut fiber or peat moss mixed with leaf litter, and provide vertical climbing hides like cork bark or egg cartons.

Lighting and Heating: Require warm temperatures between 24-28°C (75-82°F). No UVB or bright lighting is necessary as they are photophobic and prefer darkness.

Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity (60-80%) by regular misting. Water should be provided through fresh fruits, vegetables, or water gel to prevent nymphs from drowning in bowls.

Feeding and Supplementation: Omnivorous scavengers. Feed fresh fruits (apples, oranges), vegetables, and a stable source of protein like dry dog/cat food or fish flakes.

Compatibility: Highly peaceful and gregarious. Can be kept in large colonies. They are completely harmless, and cannot fly or climb clean, smooth vertical surfaces.

Health and Common Diseases: Extremely hardy species. Issues are mostly related to poor ventilation causing mold or excessive cold which stops growth, molting, and reproduction.
