Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Central America, northern South America, and the Caribbean. Inhabits forest floor leaf litter and organic debris in tropical rainforests.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Blaberidae family, genus Blaberus. Known for its disc-like pronotal shape and robust structure.
Behavior and Habits: Nocturnal and photophobic. Spends daytime hiding in dark crevices or burrowing. Gregarious species that cannot climb smooth glass or plastic surfaces, and does not fly.
Morphology: Adults measure 5.0 to 6.5 cm in length. Broad, flattened body, light brown with a black circular patch on the golden pronotum. Males have longer wings than females.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Smooth-sided plastic or glass tub of at least 40x30x30 cm. Provide stacked egg flats for hiding spots. Substrate is optional if kept solely as a feeder colony.
Lighting and Heating: Requires warm conditions: day temp 26-30°C. Temperatures below 20°C will halt breeding cycles. No UVB lighting is required.
Humidity and Hydration: Moderate humidity of 50-70%. Lightly spray one wall of the tub weekly for hydration, ensuring no standing water remains on the floor.
Feeding and Supplementation: Omnivorous scavenger. Feed dry grain mixes (oats, wheat bran) and high-protein dog kibble, supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables (carrots, apples).
Compatibility: Peaceful and highly gregarious. Can be kept in high-density colonies of hundreds of individuals. Widely used as a highly nutritious feeder insect.
Health and Common Diseases: Very hardy and low-maintenance. Mold and mite infestations are the primary risks if humidity is too high or ventilation is poor.
