Chahoua Gecko (Mossy Prehensile-tailed Gecko)

They exclusively inhabit the mid-to-high canopy, heavily resting flattened against thick, moss-encrusted oak branches.

Taxonomy and Genetics: *Mniarogekko chahoua* (formerly proudly placed within the legendary *Rhacodactylus* genus). The common name 'Chahoua' beautifully derives from an ancient native Kanak word roughly translating to 'spirit of the forest' or 'ghost.' Over the last decade, they have violently exploded into a massive, highly expensive status-symbol within elite terrarium circles strictly due to their totally staggering intelligence, dog-like docility, and the intense difficulty and massive expense involved in successfully breeding them.

Behavior and Habits: Strictly, calmly nocturnal. Violently contrasting with the highly nervous, spastic, completely blind-jumping Crested Gecko (*C. ciliatus*), the massive Chahoua operates with slow, deeply deliberate, highly calculated, chameleon-like methodical movements. It aggressively maintains piercing, intelligent eye contact with its keeper and tolerates human handling with an almost baffling, placid tranquility. If violently terrified, it will gape its mouth, exposing a blinding blood-red throat. When aggressively hunting heavy crickets at night, it heavily, deeply relies on its massive prehensile tail as a powerful 'fifth limb,' tightly wrapping it around branches to violently anchor itself while lunging into the dark void.

Morphology: A robust, heavy, breathtakingly gorgeous creature comfortably reaching 9-10 inches (25 cm) in total length. The head is broad and bluntly rounded, heavily dominated by colossal, mesmerizing marbled eyes protected by a clear permanent scale (spectacle/brille) which they constantly meticulously lick clean with a huge pink tongue. The entire body is completely covered in microscopic scales that give it the exact visual and tactile texture of crushed, wrinkled velvet. The living color palette is an absolute, staggering masterpiece of lichen/bark camouflage: screaming acid greens, burnt rust reds, stark chalky whites, dead browns, and pitch blacks. The tail is heavily prehensile, uniquely flattened, and perpetually carried tightly curled in a tight spiral. Unlike the Crested Gecko, if a Chahoua drops its tail in terror, it WILL regenerate it, albeit as a stubbier, less functional, ugly cartilaginous stump.

Terrarium Setup: A massive, sprawling, highly vertical arboreal woodland (absolute minimum 18x18x24 inches / 45x45x60 cm high for a single adult, though a massive 24x18x36 inches / 60x45x90 cm high is drastically, immensely preferred). The core architectural focus MUST strictly be on massive, thick, diagonal and horizontal cork bark branches perfectly simulating the massive boughs where they love to aggressively sleep completely flattened out (pancaking). Immense, dense live tropical foliage (huge Pothos, weeping Ficus benjamina, massive Bromeliads) will perfectly guarantee vital hiding spots and trap dripping humidity. The floor must be a thick, rich bioactive bed (coco fiber, wet peat, living sphagnum moss, and heavy woodlice/springtail cleanup crews).

Climate and Cooling: Completely intolerant to high, sweltering heat, identical to all freezing New Caledonian geckos. The ambient daytime enclosure temperature MUST sit perfectly comfortably between 73°F and 78°F (23-26°C). A very weak, incredibly mild localized basking peak of 80°F (27°C) is perfectly tolerated at the very top. A deeply refreshing, highly beneficial nighttime temperature crash plunging down to 66-70°F (19-21°C) is heavily advised to perfectly simulate cold island fog. Prolonged exposure above 84°F (29°C) rapidly, violently causes fatal, irreversible neurological heat stress. A highly controlled, low-level UVB light (Arcadia ShadeDweller 2-5%) is massively beneficial, deeply vital, and borderline mandatory to desperately stave off catastrophic MBD, especially in breeding females.

Humidity and Misting: Target a baseline hygrometry strictly hovering between 60% and 80%. The absolute most successful, elite husbandry approach violently demands a massive, heavy, drenching spike of dripping high humidity (85-90%) via a massive automated evening misting that completely floods the foliage, stringently followed by a vital, natural 'dry-out' period during the bright day plummeting to a crisp 50-60%. This massive cyclic fluctuation perfectly prevents the explosive growth of lethal, suffocating respiratory molds and fatal fungal infections, while flawlessly providing massive, dripping water droplets for the gecko to eagerly lick to hydrate. You MUST still heavily provide an elevated, clean water ledge/bowl.

Diet and Supplementation (The Calcium Death-Trap): Highly opportunistic omnivores. The massive, fundamental dietary base is exclusively provided by elite, high-quality commercial fruit/protein powder mixes (CGD - Crested Gecko Diet) specifically heavily formulated for New Caledonian geckos, perfectly mixed with fresh water. HOWEVER, IN MASSIVE CONTRAST TO CRESTED GECKOS, the giant Chahoua biologically demands a significantly, heavily increased insectivorous protein intake (massive crickets, huge dubia roaches, fat locusts). MASSIVE CALCIUM ALERT: Breeding females biologically produce completely absurd, heavily armored, monstrously thick, hyper-calcified egg shells. This violently, rapidly drains their internal skeletal calcium reserves dry; a failure to aggressively, religiously supplement their insect diet with heavy pure Calcium + D3 will rapidly, violently sentence the female to a horrific, crippling, bone-melting death (MBD - paralysis) or completely fatal, horrific egg-binding (dystocia).
