Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, from southern Alaska to California. Inhabits damp coniferous forests, ponds, and slow-moving streams.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Salamandridae family, genus Taricha. Known for producing extremely potent defensive toxins as a co-evolutionary response to garter snakes.
Behavior and Habits: Semi-aquatic; terrestrial for most of the year, returning to water bodies to breed. Active during damp days and nocturnal in dry weather.
Morphology: Features dry, granular brown skin on top and a bright yellow-orange belly. Breeding males develop smoother skin and swollen vent areas.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a semi-aquatic tank (20 gallons minimum) with a 50/50 land and water setup. Provide cork bark, rocks, and live moss for terrestrial shelter.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers cool climates. Keep temperatures between 16-21°C. Temperatures above 24°C are hazardous; keep the tank in a cool room.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain terrestrial humidity around 70-80% through daily misting. Provide clean, dechlorinated water with low filtration flow.
Feeding and Supplementation: Generalist carnivore. Offer earthworms, bloodworms, small crickets, and waxworms dusted with calcium and vitamin D3.
Compatibility: Must be kept in a species-only enclosure. Toxic skin secretions pose a serious hazard to other tankmates.
Health and Common Diseases: Heat stress and fungal skin infections. Always handle with gloves and wash hands thoroughly afterwards to prevent toxin absorption.
