Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to Madagascar. Inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, montane forests, and rivers.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Mantellidae, genus Boophis. Commonly called the Madagascar Bright-eyed Frog due to its colorful, reticulated eyes.
Behavior and Habits: Nocturnal and arboreal. Spends the night calling from branches overhanging water. Very quiet and camouflaged during daylight hours.
Morphology: Robust build, brown to green skin with darker patches. Large, prominent eyes with reticulated iris. Females grow much larger than males.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: A humid arboreal vivarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm) featuring sturdy branches, live broad-leaved plants, and a clean, shallow water section.
Lighting and Heating: Keep ambient temperatures cool (22-24 °C during the day, dropping to 18 °C at night). Never let temperatures exceed 26 °C.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires high humidity levels (80-95%). Mist the enclosure frequently or use an automated misting system with RO water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feed active insects (crickets, roaches, moths) after lights out. Supplement prey items with calcium and multivitamins.
Compatibility: Keep in a species-specific tank. Ensure adequate space to prevent territorial aggression among calling males.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly sensitive to skin dehydration and chemical residue. Use only purified, declorinated water for misting and water features.
