Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Atheris subocularis is endemic to the high-elevation mountain forests and grassland margins of western Cameroon and eastern Nigeria. Unlike lowland vipers, this species is adapted to cooler, highly humid montane conditions, where it occupies low shrubs, vines, and small trees.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Viperidae and the genus Atheris. It is distinguished from its close relative Atheris squamigera by a row of subocular scales that separate the eye from the upper labial scales, as well as distinct midbody scale row counts. Its genetic profile is shaped by geographic isolation in montane refugia.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly nocturnal and arboreal. During the day, it rests coiled in dense foliage, relying on its dark camouflage to avoid detection. At night, it hunts as an ambush predator, using its prehensile tail to hang from branches. The venom is hemotoxic and poses a significant medical risk to humans.
Morphology: Typically grows to a length of 50-65 cm. It features heavily keeled scales that give it a spiny appearance. The dorsal coloration is dark green, olive-green, or brownish-green, often with dark markings or faint bands. The head is large, triangular, and distinct. The tail tip is sometimes lighter for caudal luring.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: A vertical terrarium measuring at least 60x40x60 cm with a secure locking mechanism is required. Provide a network of climbing branches, fake vines, and live broad-leafed plants to offer secure elevated hiding places. The substrate should consist of a moisture-retaining mix like coco coir and moss.
Lighting and Heating: Because it originates from high altitudes, it requires cooler conditions than lowland species. Keep daytime temperatures at 22-25°C, with a localized basking spot of 28°C. Nighttime temperatures must drop to 18°C. Provide a low-level (5.0) UVB lamp on a 10-hour cycle, ensuring shady retreats.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain humidity levels between 70% and 80%. Mist the enclosure thoroughly each evening with purified water to simulate mountain mist. Since they rarely drink from standing water, they rely on licking droplets off foliage. Ensure good cross-ventilation to prevent stagnant air.
Feeding and Supplementation: Carnivorous. In captivity, feed frozen-thawed mice using long feeding forceps. Avoid handling prey with bare hands. Feed adults every 2-3 weeks. Dust food items with a balanced calcium and multivitamin supplement once a month to prevent metabolic bone disease.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Do not house together. The high toxicity of their venom makes them dangerous; they must be kept in locked enclosures. Manipulate only when necessary using snake hooks and container shift methods. Keep venom protocol instructions near the enclosure.
Health and Common Diseases: Heat stress is a major threat; temperatures above 29°C for extended periods can cause rapid decline. Susceptible to respiratory infections if ventilation is inadequate, and skin infections if the substrate remains waterlogged. Regular health checks by a specialized veterinarian are required.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Carnivore
- These vipers are ambush predators that feed mainly on small mammals, frogs, and lizards in the wild. In captivity, they can usually be transitioned to a diet of appropriately sized rodents, such as mice or small rats. Feeding should occur every one to two weeks depending on the age and size of the snake.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 55 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Arboreal
- Arboreal species spend the majority of their lives in trees and shrubs, requiring vertically oriented enclosures with climbing branches. Terrestrial species need ample floor space with hiding spots among the leaf litter. Both require specific temperature and humidity gradients to thrive.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- These snakes are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, becoming most active during the evening and night. During the day, they often rest coiled on branches or concealed in vegetation. Their activity levels can increase significantly after a period of rain or during the breeding season.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- They are typically ambush hunters, relying on their camouflage to remain undetected by both prey and predators. When threatened, they may adopt a defensive posture, hiss, or strike rapidly. They are generally not aggressive but will defend themselves fiercely if provoked.
- Reproduktion
- Viviparous
- Most of these species are viviparous, giving birth to live young after a gestation period of several months. The neonates are fully independent and venomous from birth. Breeding often requires a cooling period or specific environmental cues to simulate natural seasonal changes.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Display only
- Handling must be strictly avoided except when absolutely necessary for husbandry or medical reasons. Always use appropriate tools such as snake hooks or tongs to move the animal safely. These are highly venomous species, and a bite can result in severe medical consequences.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- Depending on their natural range, some may undergo a mild winter cooling period to stimulate breeding. This is not a deep brumation but rather a slight drop in temperature accompanied by reduced feeding. Tropical species may not require any significant seasonal changes in captivity.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- Shedding occurs periodically as the snake grows, heralded by the eyes turning a milky blue color. During this time, they should be left undisturbed and humidity should be slightly increased to facilitate a clean shed. A healthy snake will shed its skin in one complete, unbroken piece.
