Geographical Origin and Habitat: A critically endangered species endemic to the remote, rugged Isalo massif in southwestern Madagascar. Unlike rain-forest species, it inhabits desert-like or semi-arid environments, seeking refuge in rocky canyons and dry scrublands to escape extreme daytime heat, and emerging at night near humid underground streams and damp crevices.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A member of the family Mantellidae, commonly known as the Blue-legged Mantella or Isalo Poison Frog. They are small, robust frogs reaching 2.5 to 3 cm in length. The body features a striking bright yellow or vibrant ochre dorsal coloration, which contrasts sharply with limbs and a belly of metallic sapphire-blue marked with black spots. They have strong limbs adapted for ground movement but lack large adhesive toe pads, making them poor climbers on smooth glass surfaces.
Behavior and Habits: A very timid and hyperactive species that quickly retreats to rock crevices and cork bark shelters when disturbed. Males produce a metallic, dry, short clicking call during courtship. Eggs are deposited on damp soil or root crevices.
Morphology: Females are larger, stockier, and noticeably rounded when carrying mature eggs, whereas males are slender and vocal.

Terrarium Setup: Requires a terrestrial setup, ideally a low and wide bioactive terrarium (minimum 60x45x45 cm) decorated with smooth river rocks, leaf litter, and cork bark hides. They are strictly terrestrial and do not climb well, so tall branches are unnecessary. A highly efficient drainage layer (clay balls) is essential to prevent waterlogging, which can cause fatal bacterial infections like red leg disease.
Lighting and Heating: Adapted to the extreme thermal fluctuations of the Isalo canyons. Maintain daytime temperatures between 24 and 26°C with a warm spot on a dry rock. A crucial night drop to 18-20°C is required. Temperatures exceeding 28°C can be fatal. Provide a 5% UVB light source to prevent metabolic bone disease and support skeletal growth.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires a relative humidity of 70% to 80%. Good air circulation via mesh ventilation panels or small fans is critical to prevent stagnant conditions. Mist the terrarium with purified reverse osmosis water in the evening, allowing the surface to dry out during the day.
Feeding and Supplementation: A voracious insectivore. Feed a variety of micro-prey, including Drosophila fruit flies (both melanogaster and hydei) and micro crickets. Prey must be dusted with a high-quality calcium and vitamin D3 supplement three times a week to prevent rickets and nutritional deficiencies.
Compatibility: Highly peaceful and tolerant of conspecifics, thriving in small groups or harems. Do not house with other species or different color morphs to prevent stress, hybridization, and disease transmission.
Health and Common Diseases: Never handle these frogs with bare hands, as skin oils, soaps, and chemical residues can cause rapid, fatal poisoning through their highly permeable skin. Sudden panic can lead to snout rubbing against glass walls. Keep the terrarium in a quiet room, protect them from summer heat, and avoid exposure to cigarette smoke. They can live up to 10 years in proper conditions.
