Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widespread across the coastal bushlands, marshes, reed beds, and humid wetlands of eastern South Africa and Mozambique. They sleep attached to tall reed stalks or Papyrus leaves.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A tiny frog reaching 2.5–3 cm in adult length. Elegant, slender body with large adhesive toe pads. The dorsal color is a translucent apple-green or olive-green decorated with fine black, brown, or red spots. The belly is white and translucent.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly nocturnal and arboreal. During the day, they press themselves flat against leaves to hide. At night, they emerge to hunt, and males call with high-pitched, metallic trills near breeding pools.
Morphology: Females are larger and stockier when gravid. Males are smaller and possess a yellow or pale green vocal sac under the throat that appears wrinkled when deflated.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: A vertical vivarium (minimum 45x45x60 cm) with live plants such as Papyrus, tall reeds, and broad-leafed plants (Pothos) is required. A large shallow water section with clean, dechlorinated water must be included.
Lighting and Heating: Keep daytime temperatures at 26–29°C, dropping to 22–24°C at night. Provide a low-level (2–5%) UVB source. Ensure good airflow to avoid stagnant heat.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity of 70–80%. Mist the enclosure thoroughly with dechlorinated water every evening. Good ventilation is critical to prevent skin infections.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly insectivorous. Feed tiny insects such as fruit flies, micro-crickets, and small moths. Dust prey with calcium and vitamin D3 three times a week.
Compatibility: Completely peaceful and gregarious. Can be housed in small groups of similar-sized individuals. Avoid cohabitation with larger, predatory species.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly delicate. Vulnerable to chemical toxicity from soap residues; handle only with wet, clean hands or gloves. Poor hygiene can lead to fatal bacterial red leg syndrome.

Amphibienprofil
- Diät
- Insectivore
- The Punctate Reed Frog feeds on a diverse array of small invertebrates that inhabit its grassy and wetland environments. Its typical diet includes leafhoppers, small flies, ants, and tiny beetles. As a nocturnal predator, it uses the cover of darkness to actively hunt or patiently ambush passing prey. Its sticky tongue and fast reflexes make it highly efficient at capturing both flying and crawling insects.
- Lebenserwartung
- 2-5 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 3.5 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Arboreal
- They exhibit a highly specialized arboreal lifestyle, spending almost their entire lives off the ground in the foliage of trees and shrubs. Their specialized toe pads allow them to climb vertical surfaces and leaves with ease, rarely descending except sometimes to breed.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- These amphibians are strictly nocturnal, becoming active under the cover of darkness. During the day, they remain motionless to avoid predators, adhering to leaves or branches. As dusk approaches, they emerge to forage and vocalize, relying on low light conditions for their natural behaviors.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- Punctate Reed Frogs are adept climbers, navigating their grassy habitats with ease thanks to specialized toe pads. During the heat of the day, they tuck their limbs closely to their bodies and sleep on the underside of broad leaves, minimizing water loss. They are relatively solitary creatures but form dense, noisy aggregations around breeding sites. Their speckled, translucent appearance acts as effective camouflage against the dappled light of their environment.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Reproductive activities are triggered by the onset of seasonal rains, which create the shallow pools required for egg laying. Males position themselves on vertical reeds or plant stems above the water, emitting a series of short, metallic clicks to draw in females. After amplexus, the female lays small clusters of eggs, carefully attaching them to submerged vegetation. The eggs hatch quickly, allowing the tadpoles to maximize their growth period before the temporary pools dry up.
- Toxizität
- Harmless
- This species of frog is completely devoid of toxins and is safe to be around. They rely on their cryptic coloration—usually a mix of translucent greens and yellows with tiny dark punctations—to hide from birds, snakes, and larger amphibians. While their skin secretions lack defensive chemicals, they are crucial for maintaining the frog's hydration and protecting against bacterial infections. Human handling should be kept to an absolute minimum to avoid compromising this protective skin layer.
- Lebensphase
- Metamorphosis
- From eggs, aquatic tadpoles emerge and spend their time grazing on algae and aquatic microorganisms. The tadpoles have strong tails adapted for swimming in calm, shallow waters. Over a few weeks, they undergo metamorphosis, developing lungs and legs while their tails are absorbed. The juvenile frogs are miniature versions of the adults and quickly begin hunting small insects to fuel their rapid growth to maturity.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Display only
- As with most amphibians, handling should be avoided unless absolutely necessary for health checks or enclosure maintenance. They possess highly permeable skin that is extremely sensitive to the natural oils, salts, and any chemical residues present on human hands. They are best treated as a 'look, don't touch' display animal.
- Brumation
- This species hails from tropical and subtropical environments with relatively consistent year-round temperatures, so it does not undergo a true brumation period. While they may experience periods of reduced activity during dry seasons, a drastic cooling period is not required or recommended in captivity.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- Like all frogs, they regularly shed their skin to accommodate growth and maintain skin health, often consuming the shed afterward. Because their skin is delicate and prone to desiccation, maintaining a consistently high ambient humidity is absolutely critical to prevent shedding complications and ensuring the molt comes off in one piece.
