Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lysmata malagasy is a marine decapod shrimp first scientifically described in 2021 from specimens collected during research expeditions in southern Madagascar (southwestern Indian Ocean). It inhabits temperate and subtropical rocky reefs, living in crevices, among coral branches, and sometimes near sea anemones like Telmatactis cricoides at depths of 5 to 25 meters.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the family Lysmatidae, genus Lysmata. Like its relatives, it possesses a slender body with long, sensitive antennae. The species exhibits protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism, starting life as a male and later developing into a functional hermaphrodite possessing both male and female reproductive organs.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and social, though it can display cryptic behavior under bright lighting. It acts as a facultative cleaner shrimp, set up at cleaning stations where it signals to passing fish to clean them of ectoparasites and dead skin. It thrives when kept in pairs or small groups.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displays a distinct color pattern consisting of alternating red or reddish-brown and white or yellowish longitudinal stripes along the body, paired with long white antennae. Because mature specimens are simultaneous hermaphrodites, there is no distinct external sexual dimorphism between individuals.

Tank Setup: A well-matured reef aquarium of at least 80-100 liters (approx. 20-25 gallons) is recommended. Provide ample live rock arranged to form caves, crevices, and shady overhangs where the shrimp can hide during the day and seek shelter when molting. Dimmed lighting helps reduce their shyness.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger and detritivore. It eats organic detritus, algae, and fish parasites. In the aquarium, it will eagerly consume almost any fish food offered, including frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, sinking pellets, and flake foods. They will scavenge the substrate and rocks for leftovers.
Water Quality: Maintain stable reef parameters: water temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity 1.023-1.025. Nitrates and phosphates should be kept low. Never introduce copper-based treatments, as copper is highly toxic to invertebrates. Maintain adequate iodine levels to assist with molting.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Peaceful and reef-safe. It does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates. Coexists well with small, peaceful reef fish. Do not house with large, predatory tankmates such as hawkfish, triggerfish, groupers, or aggressive crabs, which will prey on the shrimp.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding is highly challenging in a home environment. Any two mature individuals can mate since they are simultaneous hermaphrodites. The eggs are carried under the abdomen until they hatch. The larvae go through multiple delicate planktonic stages that require specialized feeding and rearing systems.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is molting failure, which can be fatal if calcium or iodine levels are insufficient, or if heavy metals are present. They are highly sensitive to sudden changes in salinity and temperature, making slow drip acclimation mandatory when introducing them to the aquarium.
