Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Atlantic Ocean: distributed from southern Florida, Bahamas, throughout the Caribbean Sea. It is found in shallow reefs, rubble flats, and rocky crevices, living in obligate symbiosis with the curlycue anemone Bartholomea annulata.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the family Alpheidae, genus Alpheus. It is characterized by an asymmetric, modified snapping claw capable of producing a loud clicking sound and a high-velocity cavitation bubble to stun prey or ward off intruders. Grows up to 4.5 cm.
Social Behavior: Territorial, often forming stable monogamous pairs. It spends its time digging burrows under the base of its host anemone, maintaining a symbiotic relationship. It defends its territory aggressively using its snapping claw to produce warning snaps.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body coloration ranges from brown to bright red with lighter bands. Sexual dimorphism is not highly pronounced externally, though mature males usually possess a slightly larger snapping claw compared to females.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Tank Setup: Requires a reef aquarium of at least 80 liters (approx. 20 gallons). Provide a mix of live sand, fine gravel, and rubble to allow for burrowing. Ensure the rockwork is stable, resting on the glass, to prevent collapses. The host anemone should be present.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. It feeds on leftover fish food, mysis, brine shrimp, and organic detritus. It also consumes mucus produced by the host anemone. Feed by targeting food close to the burrow using a pipette.
Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters: temperature 22-27°C (72-80°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.023-1.025, and GH 15-25. Copper-based medications are strictly lethal. Salinity stability is essential for proper exoskeleton molting cycles.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Compatible with peaceful reef fish and other non-predatory invertebrates. Do not house with predatory species like hawkfish, puffers, or large wrasses. Aggressive towards other snapping shrimp of the same species.
Aquarium Breeding: Form stable, long-term monogamous pairs. Spawning occurs regularly, and the female carries eggs under her abdomen. Raising the planktonic larvae is extremely difficult in home systems due to the complex pelagic stage.
Risks and Diseases: Highly vulnerable during molting. It will hide deep under the anemone until its new shell hardens. Highly sensitive to heavy metals, chlorine, and rapid changes in salinity. Drip-acclimation is required.

Wirbelloses Profil
- Diät
- Omnivore
- The Alpheus armatus is generally considered an opportunistic omnivore that will scavenge for leftover food, detritus, and small organisms. In the home aquarium, its diet should be supplemented with a variety of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking pellets. Providing a varied diet ensures they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and molting. Feeding them targeted amounts helps prevent starvation while keeping the aquarium clean.
- Ökologische Rolle
- Symbiont
- In its natural habitat, the Alpheus armatus serves as a valuable cleaner and scavenger, helping to control detritus and organic waste. By consuming uneaten food and dead organic matter, it plays a critical role in nutrient recycling within the reef ecosystem. Some species within this group also engage in symbiotic relationships with other marine life, providing cleaning services in exchange for food. Their presence indicates a healthy and balanced marine environment.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 4.5 cm
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- While not notorious escape artists, the Alpheus armatus can be startled easily and may dart unpredictably when frightened. In open-top aquariums, this sudden burst of speed could potentially cause them to launch out of the water. It is advisable to use a tight-fitting lid or a mesh screen top to prevent any accidental escapes. Minimizing sudden movements or aggressive tank mates will also reduce the likelihood of jumping behavior.
- Stoßempfindlichkeit
- High
- The Alpheus armatus is quite sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters such as salinity, temperature, and pH. Rapid fluctuations can cause severe osmotic shock, leading to stress, failed molts, or immediate death. It is highly recommended to use a slow drip acclimation method over several hours when introducing them to a new aquarium. Consistent water quality and stability are paramount for their long-term survival and health.
- Kalzium und Mineralien
- Medium
- Proper calcium levels are essential for the Alpheus armatus to successfully build and maintain its exoskeleton. Along with calcium, trace elements like iodine and magnesium must be kept at optimal marine levels to facilitate the molting process. A lack of sufficient calcium can result in soft shells, deformities, and ultimately fatal molting complications. Regular water changes with high-quality salt mix usually provide adequate amounts of these crucial minerals.
- Häutung
- Yes
- Molting is a vulnerable time for the Alpheus armatus, during which it sheds its old exoskeleton to grow a new, larger one. Following a molt, the invertebrate will hide in the rockwork for a few days until its new shell hardens completely. During this period, they are highly susceptible to predation and physical damage from tank mates. It is best to leave the discarded exoskeleton in the tank, as they often consume it to reclaim valuable minerals.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Breeding the Alpheus armatus in a home aquarium can be challenging due to the complex larval stages and dietary needs of the offspring. These invertebrates often carry their eggs under their abdomen until they hatch into planktonic larvae. Raising the delicate larvae requires specialized rearing tanks and constant supplies of specific microscopic live foods. Although spontaneous spawning is common in well-fed adults, successful rearing to maturity is rarely achieved by casual aquarists.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Reef safe
- The Alpheus armatus is generally peaceful and can be safely housed with a wide variety of reef-safe fish and corals. Care should be taken to avoid keeping them with large, aggressive fish such as triggerfish, puffers, or large wrasses that might view them as a meal. They are usually tolerant of other peaceful invertebrates, though some territorial squabbles may occur with closely related species. Providing ample hiding spots among live rock will help them feel secure and reduce stress.
