Artbeschreibung

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Originating from Suriname, in the Saramacca river basin. Inhabits the shade of clear streams ("creeks") covered by the forest canopy, in which currents slowly lap sandy mounds enriched by abundant organic debris and foliage.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Dwarf Callichthyidae. Of minute build, rarely reaches 4 cm (1.6 inches). Morphologically it is placed in the group of short-snouted Corydoras, characterized by an extremely stocky and aerodynamic silhouette.
Social Behavior: Laborious bottom sheep. Dramatically suffers and dies of consumption if kept solitary or in pairs. Demands a considerable number of members in the school (ideal from 8-10 up) to show the hyperactivity and the incessant rooting that distinguishes it.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Beige-bronze base color with silvery reflections. Absence of obvious "saddles": a subtle black reticulation decorates the back and head, fused into timid mottling. Females stand out for the visibly rounded body diameter compared to the linearity of the males.

Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner

Aquarium Setup: Obligatory biotope setup: single bottom in fine dark inert sand to enhance metallic reflections and protect its mouth. Bog woods interwoven with Anubias, and extremely soft lights to reassure the school.
Diet and Feeding: Voracious digging micro-predator. The grain size of the meal is essential: very fine baits and crushed tablets are combined with massive tri-weekly integrations of live food such as daphnia, cyclops, and thawed or live brine shrimp.
Water Quality: Demands typical temperate forest conditions: Temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F), stable pH between neutral and weakly acidic (6.0 - 7.2), combined with low or moderate GH (2-12). Lethally suffers high organic loads of ammonia: precise but delicate siphonings are required.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Due to its fragility, it must be flanked exclusively by Lilliputian fish: Ember Tetras, Boraras, and tiny Loricariids. Large Cichlids or burrowing fish would destroy it at a sensory level, leading to malnutrition.
Aquarium Breeding: Teased by cold thermal "monsoon changes", it launches into tight T-shaped matings. The small but resistant, highly adhesive eggs are sealed individually to the glass or foliage. Isolation of the breeders necessary against cannibalism.
Risks and Diseases: In contact with coarse or rough gravel, the precious barbels go into fulminant systemic bacterial necrosis. Chronic and inexorable sensitivity to treatments and baths with unreduced dosages of Malachite green or Copper.

Fischprofil

Temperament
Semi-aggressive
The temperament of Hoplisoma sanchesi is exceptionally peaceful and highly social in nature. They must be kept in groups of at least six individuals to thrive. In proper schools, they are confident and constantly active across the bottom.
Diät
Omnivore
The diet of Hoplisoma sanchesi primarily features benthic organisms and small detritus. In captivity, they eagerly eat sinking pellets and high-quality bottom-feeder wafers. Live foods like bloodworms and daphnia should be offered for optimal health.
Lebenserwartung
5-7 years

Geschlechterverhältnis
Specific M:F ratio
A specific sex ratio is unnecessary for the general community keeping of Hoplisoma sanchesi. For dedicated breeding, a ratio of two males per female is optimal. Females are visibly rounder and broader, while males are slender.
Fütterungsfrequenz
Twice daily
It is recommended to feed Hoplisoma sanchesi one or two times daily in moderate portions. Ensure the food reaches the substrate before mid-water fish consume it all. Feeding just before lights out helps them forage peacefully without stress.
Bioload
Low
The bioload of Hoplisoma sanchesi is relatively low compared to larger tank mates. Since they are schooling fish, their combined waste can accumulate over time. Consistent filtration and weekly water changes are necessary for maintaining clean water.
Fluss
Stagnant
Hoplisoma sanchesi prefers a moderate water flow that replicates gentle Amazonian streams. This circulation thoroughly oxygenates the water and prevents detritus accumulation. Calm resting zones should also be provided for relaxation.
Sprungrisiko
Yes
The jump risk for Hoplisoma sanchesi is very low compared to surface-dwelling fish. However, their unique respiratory system causes occasional rapid surface darting. A secure aquarium lid is highly recommended to prevent accidental escapes.
Reproduktion
Oviparous
Breeding Hoplisoma sanchesi in an aquarium is highly achievable with proper conditioning. Spawning is typically triggered by a large, slightly cooler water change. The female then deposits adhesive eggs on aquarium glass or broad plant leaves.
Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
Semi-aggressive
In terms of compatibility, Hoplisoma sanchesi is extremely peaceful and ideal for community setups. They coexist perfectly with small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids. Large, aggressive bottom-dwellers must be avoided to prevent undue competition.
Tankfüllstand
Bottom
As obligate bottom-dwellers, Hoplisoma sanchesi spends the vast majority of its time on the substrate. They constantly search for food by sifting fine sand with their sensitive barbels. They occasionally dart to the surface to gulp atmospheric air.
