Geographical Origin and Habitat: Cambarellus patzcuarensis is endemic to Lake Pátzcuaro, a high-altitude lake in Michoacán, Mexico. It inhabits shallow, turbid waters close to shoreline reed beds, where it clings to thick submerged vegetation (principally Elodea) and organic detritus over muddy bottoms.
Taxonomy: Belonging to the family Cambaridae, this is a dwarf crayfish species reaching a maximum adult size of 3-4 cm. The popular "Orange" (CPO) variety is a line-bred color mutation developed in captivity. It features fully functional, yet miniaturized pincers.
Social Behavior: Considerably less destructive and territorial than larger crayfish species. While males may engage in minor claw-waving territorial skirmishes, these rarely result in injury. CPOs are active during the day, constantly scavenging the bottom.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The CPO variety is selectively bred for a solid bright orange color, often with darker reddish stripes along its back. Sexual dimorphism is determined by inspecting the underside of the abdomen: males have rigid hook-like copulatory organs (gonopods) at the base of the walk legs, whereas females have a flat sternum.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Can be housed with small, peaceful mid-to-top water fish (e.g. guppies, platies, neon tetras) and snails. Avoid bottom-dwelling species (like large Corydoras) and active predators (puffers, large loaches). They may occasionally pinch slower dwarf shrimp or capture baby shrimp.
Aquarium Breeding: Quite straightforward. The female carries 20-50 eggs attached to her swimmerets (pleopods) for 3-4 weeks. The young emerge as miniature, fully formed crayfish. Dense mosses and micro-caves are required to protect them from cannibalism by adults.
Risks and Diseases: Highly susceptible to poor water quality and copper poisoning. They are potential carriers of the "crayfish plague" (Aphanomyces astaci), which is harmless to American species but fatal to European/Australian crayfish. Molting issues can occur if water hardness (GH) is too low.
