Geographical Origin and Habitat: Echinodorus floribundus is widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It inhabits marshes, wetlands, seasonal floodplains, and the margins of slow-moving rivers. As an amphibious species, it adapts well to seasonal water level fluctuations, growing completely submerged during high water periods and emerging onto muddy banks to flower when water levels recede.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Belonging to the family Alismataceae, genus Echinodorus. It has historically been confused with other species in the Echinodorus grandiflorus complex, from which it is distinguished by specific morphological details of the inflorescence and achenes (seeds). It possesses a stable genetic profile, exhibiting great biological resilience and adaptation to different light levels.
Physical Structure: A large, robust herbaceous plant forming a dense rosette from a thick, fibrous rhizome. Submerged leaves feature long petioles and lanceolate to narrowly oval blades. Emersed leaves are significantly larger, with thick petioles and broad cordate or ovate blades that can exceed 30-50 cm in total height. The root system is extremely massive and deep, colonizing a large area of the substrate.
Color & Texture: Leaves are a uniform, bright green to olive-green. The leaf blade has a tough, leathery (coriaceous) texture with prominent longitudinal veins (typically 5 to 9) running from the base of the petiole to the leaf tip, connected by fine transverse veinlets. This thick structure provides excellent durability against herbivorous fish and snails.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Lighting & CO2: Requires moderate to high light intensity (at least 0.5-1 watt per liter) to maintain compact growth and prevent the lower leaves from yellowing and decaying. CO2 injection is not strictly mandatory, but it significantly boosts photosynthesis, accelerating leaf production and enhancing overall plant size, especially when grown fully submerged.
Nutrition & Substrate: Highly demanding regarding root nutrition. It must be planted in a deep substrate of at least 8-10 cm, rich in iron, clay, and organic matter. Use a nutrient-rich aquasoil or regularly insert root fertilizer tabs near the base of the plant. Iron deficiency quickly causes leaf chlorosis, characterized by pale, yellowing, or translucent new leaves.
Water Chemistry: Very adaptable. Prefers a pH range of 6.0 to 7.8, with water hardness from soft to medium-hard (GH 5-15°dGH, KH 3-10°dKH). It thrives at temperatures between 20°C and 28°C (68-82°F). Regular water changes are beneficial to replenish essential trace minerals and prevent organic waste accumulation.
Space Management & Placement: Due to its massive potential size, it must be placed in the background of large aquariums (minimum 200-300 liters) or used as a solitary centerpiece in open-top tanks. It will readily grow out of the water in shallow tanks, forming emersed leaves that can shade out smaller plants below.
Pruning: Exhibits rapid growth under optimal nutrient levels. Pruning is done by cutting off the oldest, damaged, or yellowing outer leaves close to the rhizome base using sharp scissors to encourage new inner growth. Propagation is achieved via adventitious plantlets that form along long inflorescence runners, which can be detached and planted.
Risks & Diseases: Iron deficiency (chlorosis) is the most common nutritional issue. Additionally, when grown in closed aquariums with dry air, the tips of emersed leaves may dry out and turn brown. While it is hardy, large herbivorous fish (such as silver dollars or large cichlids) may still damage the leaves if not properly fed.

Without a fertile bed or regular addition of root tabs, its growth will be stunted and its large leaves may show signs of nutrient deficiency.
