Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lysmata seticaudata is native to the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the temperate coastlines of France and the Iberian Peninsula down to the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. It inhabits shallow coastal waters, typically between 1 and 30 meters deep, sheltering inside rocky crevices, dark caves, Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds, and under large stones. It prefers dim environments where it can remain hidden during daylight hours.
Taxonomy: Belonging to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, infraorder Caridea, family Lysmatidae, and genus Lysmata. It is distinguished from other members of its genus by its unique longitudinal striping pattern and rostral characteristics. It is a simultaneous hermaphrodite; every mature adult possesses functional male and female reproductive organs, though they require a partner to mate as self-fertilization does not occur.
Social Behavior: This is a gregarious species that lives in small groups within the same rocky shelter. It acts as a cleaner shrimp, establishing cleaning stations where it removes external parasites and dead tissue from the skin of visiting fish. It has nocturnal habits, emerging at dusk to explore the substrate for detritus and food.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body is translucent with a striking pattern of red and white or pinkish-red longitudinal stripes running along its length, accompanied by a darker patch on the tail. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism due to its simultaneous hermaphroditic nature; individuals carrying eggs under their pleopods act temporarily as the female partner.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: Well-suited for nano aquariums of 40 liters or larger. It is essential to provide live rock arranged to form small caves and dark overhangs where the shrimp can hide during the day. Lighting should include shaded areas. Water flow should be moderate. Cover filter intakes and powerheads to prevent these small invertebrates from being sucked in.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous and detritivorous. In the home aquarium, it is highly valued for actively consuming pest Aiptasia anemones. It also accepts frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, krill), sinking pellets, flakes, and organic detritus. Regular feeding is recommended to prevent them from picking at coral polyps when hungry.
Water Quality: Requires stable marine conditions: temperature between 18 °C and 25 °C (tolerating cooler temperatures than tropical species), pH 8.1 to 8.4, and specific gravity (SG) 1.020 to 1.025. Iodine supplementation is vital to support regular molting of the exoskeleton. Copper must be completely absent from the water.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Very peaceful, making it compatible with most small to medium reef fish. Do not house with predatory species that feed on crustaceans, such as hawkfish, puffers, triggerfish, wrasses, or groupers. It is reef-safe, although it may occasionally steal food directly from coral polyps.
Aquarium Breeding: Mating occurs frequently in aquariums. After molting, two shrimp mate and one carries the fertilized eggs under its abdomen. The larvae are released into the water column at night. However, raising the larvae is extremely difficult due to their prolonged pelagic larval stages requiring specialized micro-foods.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to copper treatments and rapid changes in salinity (osmotic shock). Slow drip acclimation is mandatory. The molting period is highly critical; a lack of iodine or harassment by tankmates during a molt can cause fatal complications or limb deformities.

This jumping behavior makes an unsecured aquarium a severe hazard. A tight-fitting lid or mesh top is absolutely mandatory to prevent them from becoming desiccated on the floor.
