Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and French Polynesia. Inhabits shallow coral reefs, rubble beds, and lagoons. They are highly nocturnal, remaining hidden in deep caves during the daylight hours. They prefer shallow reef slopes and lagoons with rubble.
Taxonomy: Member of the family Hippolytidae. Features a robust body with a rigid exoskeleton, spiny legs, and dorsal tufts of setae (hair-like structures) enhancing camouflage. Reaches 5-6 cm. The genus Saron is well-known for its cryptic species and elaborate physical adaptations. Their carapace shape resembles sea algae clumps.
Social Behavior: Mainly nocturnal and light-avoiding. Spends daylight hours hidden deep under rocks or inside reef crevices, becoming active under cover of darkness to forage. They sway their bodies back and forth to mimic the movement of algae in water currents. This swaying is synchronized with water movement.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Marbled coloration in shades of brown, green, and grey during the day; shifts to a bright reddish-orange hue at night. Adult males develop exceptionally long first walking legs with claws. Their legs are equipped with small bristles that detect vibrations in the surrounding water. The marbled green pattern is highly variable.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: Requires a tank of at least 15-20 gallons provided with plenty of live rock, dark caves, and shaded crevices where the shrimp can hide during the day. Provide a well-structured aquascape with numerous small caves and overhangs. Live rock is essential for biological filtration.
Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic omnivore. Feeds on detritus, leftover fish food, algae, and small benthic organisms. Accepts frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and sinking pellets. They will consume leftover fish food, making them useful clean-up members. Offer commercial shrimp pellets at night.
Water Quality: Standard reef parameters. Salinity SG 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C. Very sensitive to chemical changes. Copper must be strictly avoided. Ensure iodine levels are maintained to support the regular shedding of their exoskeleton. Monitor alkalinity and calcium levels too.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Not 100% reef-safe. May nip at small coral polyps (SPS and LPS), zoanthids, or small feather dusters if underfed. Otherwise compatible with peaceful reef fish. Do not keep them with large predatory wrasses or groupers that can swallow them whole. Triggerfish are also dangerous tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Females carry eggs under their abdomen. The larval stages are pelagic and complex, and do not survive standard home aquarium filtration systems. Breeding projects require specialized plankton food and stable water parameters. Larval rearing is best conducted in separate tanks.
Risks and Diseases: Low iodine or calcium leading to failed molts or lost limbs. Vulnerable to predation right after shedding its exoskeleton when its body is soft. Ensure stable salinity, as rapid changes can trigger premature and fatal molts. Acclimate them slowly using the drip method.
