Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species inhabits the subtropical and tropical waters of the Western Indian Ocean, with documented occurrences along the coasts of South Africa and Mozambique. It is found in shallow coastal areas, estuaries, and sandy reefs, where it excavates extensive burrows beneath protective rocks or coral colonies.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the family Alpheidae and the genus Alpheus. Members of this genus are characterized by an asymmetrical pair of claws, with one hypertrophied claw used as a pistol to stun prey or warn rivals. Alpheus adamastor reaches an adult size of about 4 to 5 centimeters, displaying a robust and cylindrical body.
Social Behavior: It is a burrowing, territorial species towards same-sex conspecifics. It is highly famous for its mutualistic relationship with symbiotic gobies (such as Amblyeleotris and Cryptocentrus). The shrimp digs and maintains the burrow, while the keen-sighted goby acts as a sentinel, communicating danger via tail flicks against the shrimp's antennae.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The color pattern consists of cryptic shades of sand-gray, beige, and light brown with darker transverse bands, offering excellent camouflage. The modified snapping claw often exhibits darker colors at the tip. No obvious external sexual dimorphism exists, except for females carrying egg masses under their abdomen.

Tank Setup: Requires a marine aquarium with a deep substrate of fine sand mixed with rubble (at least 8-10 cm) to allow natural burrowing behavior. It is critical to place the base rocks directly on the bottom glass of the tank to prevent burrowing activities from causing a dangerous collapse of the rockwork.
Diet and Feeding: It is an opportunistic omnivorous scavenger. It feeds on organic detritus, leftover fish foods, frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill), and sinking pellets. When paired with a goby, it will eagerly consume food items brought near the burrow entrance by its fish companion.
Water Quality: Demands stable marine parameters: temperature 20°C to 25°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, specific gravity between 1.023 and 1.025, and carbonate hardness (KH) of 8 to 12 dKH. It is highly sensitive to rapid osmotic changes, so water changes must be managed carefully.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe and peaceful towards corals and other non-predatory tankmates. Housing it with a compatible goby is strongly recommended. Do not keep it with large predatory bottom-dwellers such as wrasses, hawkfish, groupers, or octopuses, which would dig it out of the sand and eat it.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is not documented. Fertilized eggs are carried by the female under her pleopods. The hatched larvae are planktonic and extremely fragile, requiring specialized setups and microscopic live food cultures to survive the larval development stages.
Risks and Diseases: It is highly sensitive to copper-based medications and heavy metals. Proper levels of calcium, magnesium, and trace elements are necessary to ensure successful molting. The shrimp will remain sealed inside its burrow during and immediately after a molt until its new shell hardens.
