Description de l'espèce
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Amblyeleotris fasciata is widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from the Red Sea and East Africa to the islands of Micronesia and Polynesia, reaching north to southern Japan and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It inhabits protected sandy lagoons, reef bases, and tidal flats, typically at depths between 4 and 22 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Gobiidae, it exhibits the classic elongated, cylindrical body shape of benthic gobies. The eyes are set closely together and high on the head. It features a wide mouth with fleshy lips and well-developed pectoral fins that it uses to prop itself up on the sandy seabed. Adults reach a maximum length of about 8.0 to 9.0 centimeters.
Social Behavior: Lives in a close mutualistic symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimps of the genus Alpheus. The goby acts as a sentry outside the burrow to signal threats to the shrimp (which has poor eyesight), while the shrimp excavates and maintains their shared home. It is peaceful toward other tankmates but territorial against same-sex conspecifics.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The coloration is highly striking, featuring a cream-white background body color crossed by five or six broad vertical bands of bright red or reddish-brown. The dorsal and caudal fins are decorated with iridescent red and yellow dots. There is no distinct external sexual dimorphism, though adult males can be slightly larger.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Aquarium Setup: Requires a marine aquarium of at least 80 liters (approx. 20 gallons). A fine sand bed of at least 5 to 7 centimeters deep is essential, mixed with small shell pieces and coral rubble to assist the partner shrimp in burrow construction. Rockwork must be secure. A tight lid or mesh cover is mandatory to prevent escape.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on small crustaceans, zooplankton, and benthic worms. In captivity, feed it regularly with frozen foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped krill. It will accept sinking dry pellets and flakes. Try to target-feed near the entrance of its burrow to ensure it eats.
Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters: water temperature between 22°C and 26°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, specific gravity between 1.023 and 1.025, and KH at 8-12 dKH. Keep nitrates and phosphates very low via regular water changes and efficient filtration. Provide good water circulation for high oxygenation.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Excellent reef-safe candidate for community and reef tanks. Keeping it with a symbiotic pistol shrimp (e.g., Alpheus bellulus) is highly recommended. It shares space well with peaceful reef fish like clownfish, anthias, and small wrasses. Avoid large, predatory or highly territorial tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is extremely difficult. The pair spawns inside the sandy burrow, where the male guards and aerates the eggs. The newly hatched larvae are planktonic and very small, needing specialized live food like rotifers and microalgae cultures to survive their initial development stages.
Risks and Diseases: Jumping out of the tank is a major risk, especially at night or during introduction. Without its symbiotic shrimp partner or in a bare tank, the goby can suffer from high stress levels and may starve. Susceptible to common marine external parasites like ich if stressed.

Profil de poisson
- Tempérament
- Territorial
- The Amblyeleotris fasciata possesses a generally peaceful yet somewhat timid and cautious temperament. It relies completely on its burrow as a safe haven, retreating instantly at any sign of perceived danger. In the wild and in captivity, it acts as the vigilant lookout while its visually impaired shrimp partner maintains their shared home.
- Régime alimentaire
- Carnivore
- In its natural habitat, the Amblyeleotris fasciata functions as a micro-predator, consuming benthic invertebrates and passing zooplankton. Captive specimens typically adapt quickly to a carnivorous diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and sinking micropellets. Ensuring that food reaches the lower levels of the aquarium is essential for their long-term nutritional health.
- Espérance de vie
- 3-5 years
- Taille adulte
- 8 cm
- Ratio des sexes
- Solitary
- It is generally advisable to keep the Amblyeleotris fasciata singly unless you can acquire a confirmed mated pair. Attempting to house two males or incompatible individuals in the same tank often leads to severe territorial disputes. A harmonious pair will usually share a single burrow and collaborate with the same pistol shrimp.
- Fréquence d'alimentation
- Twice daily
- To support their metabolic needs, the Amblyeleotris fasciata should be offered small meals one to two times daily. Frequent, appropriately sized feedings are far more beneficial than infrequent large meals. Target feeding near the entrance of their burrow often yields the best results and ensures they outcompete faster tank mates.
- Charge biologique
- Low to Medium
- The Amblyeleotris fasciata has a minimal bioload, making it an excellent candidate for reef aquariums of various sizes. Because of its small physical stature and efficient metabolism, it contributes very little waste to the water column. This characteristic helps aquarists maintain pristine water parameters without putting undue stress on biological filtration systems.
- Courant
- Strong
- The Amblyeleotris fasciata strongly prefers areas of the tank with low to moderate water flow. Gentle currents allow them to hover comfortably above the substrate without expending excessive energy. Furthermore, calmer water facilitates clear tactile communication with their symbiotic shrimp partner.
- Risque de saut
- Yes
- Like most members of its genus, the Amblyeleotris fasciata presents a significant risk of jumping out of an open aquarium. Startling events, such as abrupt lighting changes or aggressive encounters, can trigger a panic response. A tight-fitting lid or a specialized mesh screen is a mandatory requirement to prevent loss of life.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- The Amblyeleotris fasciata is a demersal spawner, carefully depositing its eggs within the protected confines of its substrate burrow. After fertilization, the male typically assumes the role of guarding the clutch until the fry hatch. While captive breeding is quite rare in home aquaria, it can sometimes be achieved in dedicated breeding setups with pristine conditions.
- Compatibilité et compagnons
- Reef safe
- This goby exhibits a highly peaceful demeanor and thrives in community setups alongside other tranquil fish. The Amblyeleotris fasciata is particularly prized for its ability to form a fascinating mutualistic bond with alpheid pistol shrimp. It is imperative to avoid housing them with large, boisterous, or predatory tank mates that could intimidate or consume them.
- Niveau dans le bac
- Bottom
- As a dedicated benthic species, the Amblyeleotris fasciata spends the vast majority of its life resting directly on or hovering slightly above the substrate. They establish their territory around a primary burrow entrance and rarely venture into the middle or upper water column. Providing a deep bed of fine or mixed-grade sand is crucial to support their natural behaviors.
