Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Central America, from southern Mexico to Panama. Inhabits moist leaf litter, rotting logs, and rocky crevices in tropical rainforests.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Xantusiidae, genus Lepidophyma. Known for parthenogenesis in several populations (all-female colonies reproducing without males).
Behavior and Habits: Secretive, terrestrial, and strictly nocturnal. Spends the day hidden in damp crevices or under bark, hunting small insects at night.
Morphology: Rough skin with raised, bead-like tubercles resembling a crocodile. Dark brown to black with rows of yellow spots on sides. Visually identical sexes.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: A terrarium (minimum 60x45x30 cm) with a deep, moist substrate (peat moss and coconut fiber) layered with leaf litter and cork bark shelters.
Lighting and Heating: Prefers moderate temperatures. Daytime ambient 22-25 °C, with a warm spot of 28 °C. Night drop to 18-20 °C. Low-level UVB light is recommended.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity (70-85%) with daily misting. A shallow water bowl must be kept clean and filled with fresh water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Offer crickets, roaches, small mealworms, and isopods. Dust food with calcium and vitamins weekly.
Compatibility: Territorial and solitary. Best housed individually to avoid stress-induced fighting, unless kept in a very large enclosure.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly prone to dehydration if humidity levels drop. Ensure proper cross-ventilation to prevent skin fungus in damp setups.
