Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Found throughout the eastern and southern United States. Inhabits shallow freshwater marshes, muddy ponds, slow-moving creeks, and wet meadows.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Kinosternidae family, genus Kinosternon. Features a double-hinged plastron allowing it to partially close its shell for protection.
Behavior and Habits: Semi-aquatic but a relatively poor swimmer; prefers walking on the bottom rather than swimming. Spends significant time on land and hibernates in winter.
Morphology: Small turtle, shell length ranges from 8.0 to 12.0 cm. Shell color is dark brown to black. Males have longer, thicker tails with a claw-like tip.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 80x40x40 cm. Water depth should be shallow (15-20 cm) to allow the turtle to reach the surface while resting on the bottom. Provide a dry land area.
Lighting and Heating: Basking zone requires a spot lamp at 30-32°C and a medium-intensity UVB source (5.0). Water temperature should be maintained between 20°C and 24°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Aquatic species; air humidity is naturally maintained by water evaporation. Efficient filtration is mandatory to keep the water pristine.
Feeding and Supplementation: Primarily carnivorous. Feed live minnows, earthworms, snails, insects, and high-quality commercial pellets. Supplement with calcium.
Compatibility: Territorial and aggressive. Individual housing is strongly recommended to prevent biting and injury. Cohabitation is highly risky.
Health and Common Diseases: Healthy turtles benefit from winter hibernation at 4-10°C. Prone to shell rot and skin infections if water quality is poor or basking site is ignored.
