Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa. Found in open savannas, grasslands, and marshes, hiding under logs or burrowing during dry seasons.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Hyperoliidae family. Known for its distinct metallic bubbling advertisement call.
Behavior and Habits: Terrestrial and nocturnal. Adapted for running or walking quickly rather than leaping. Spends daytime buried in soil or leaf litter.
Morphology: Reaches 1 to 1.8 inches in length. Grey-olive base with distinct dark brown longitudinal stripes. Males exhibit a dark, expandable vocal pouch.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Provide a horizontal terrarium (15-20 gallons) with a thick, loose substrate layer of coconut fiber to support burrowing behavior.
Lighting and Heating: Maintain daytime temperatures around 24-27°C. A low-output UVB light helps regulate natural circadian rhythms.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity levels around 80-85%. Mist daily with clean, non-chlorinated water and supply a shallow water bowl.
Feeding and Supplementation: Insectivorous. Diet should consist of live crickets, flies, and small roaches dusted with calcium and vitamin D3.
Compatibility: Safe to keep communally with other Senegal Running Frogs. Do not mix with smaller species that can be swallowed.
Health and Common Diseases: Susceptible to skin rot and bacterial infections if housed in waterlogged, poorly ventilated enclosures.
