Tangerine Isopod (Cubaris sp.)
Cubaris sp. 'Tangerine'
The Cubaris 'Tangerine'. A very rare and exquisite Asian isopod (0.5 - 0.6 inches) coveted for its extraordinary color. Unlike the brown shades of the Amber, the Tangerine exhibits a very smooth solid mandarin orange or neon peach carapace, often bordered or crossed by impalpable lateral translucent detachments. Very shy and prone to phobias for light, it is a very delicate jewel that demands maniacal care, deep tropical gradients and specialized calcareous foods to avert lethal molt collapses.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Turbid and karst jungles of Southeast Asia, buried alive under endless carpets of roots and wet Thai foliage.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Armadillidae. (Fluorescent Ceramic Isopod). Belongs to the nobility of the undescribed Cubaris sp. Although 'Orange' or 'Peach' morphs exist in genera like Porcellio or Armadillidium, the Cubaris Tangerine elevates the mutation to an alien level thanks to its perfectly enameled barrel-shaped body and flawless Asian hermetic conglobation.
Behavior and Habits: Phobic mandarin candies. Agoraphobic to the extreme. Their fluorescent genetics would make them living bait in the woods, so instinct paralyzes them in the dark. They dig and station all year round stuck among the porosities of hot calcareous rocks or in the asphyxiating moss and never wander outdoors. Atrociously slow fertility rate: every aborted egg due to visual stress is a burning financial defeat.
Morphology: Total perfect enameled candy dome (Up to 0.6 inches / 1.5 cm). Very smooth opalescent carapace Neon Mandarin Orange or acid peach color, free of invasive dark spots or bands. In some specimens the epimeral lobes (hips) are slightly more diaphanous, as if the solid orange body faded into transparent molten glass. Contrasting alien black eyes.

Profil der terrestrischen Wirbellosen
- Diät
- Detritivore
- This species thrives on a varied diet rich in decaying organic matter. They primarily consume high-quality leaf litter and soft rotting wood. Supplemental calcium and occasional vegetable scraps are essential for maintaining proper health and a strong exoskeleton.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 1.6 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are robust terrestrial invertebrates that thrive in a well-maintained terrarium environment. A distinct moisture gradient is crucial to prevent both fatal dehydration and harmful fungal infections. They spend the vast majority of their time navigating the complex microhabitats of the damp forest floor.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- This species is primarily active during the night and the dimmer crepuscular hours. They typically remain hidden during the peak daylight hours to conserve vital moisture and avoid predators. Providing a natural day-night light cycle helps regulate their natural foraging and resting behaviors.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- They are inherently social and gregarious animals that perform best when housed in large, well-established colonies. They naturally aggregate in dense clusters within the most humid and protected microhabitats of their enclosure, a behavior that aids in collective moisture retention and stimulates natural reproductive cycles.
- Reproduktion
- Marsupial
- Reproduction occurs consistently throughout the year when kept under optimal terrarium conditions. Females incubate their developing eggs within a specialized ventral brood pouch known as a marsupium. The young emerge as fully formed miniatures and require stable moisture to survive their initial delicate molts.
- Giftig
- No
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Tolerant
- Handling should be kept to an absolute minimum to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Their incredibly delicate bodies and limbs can be easily injured by improper or forceful grasping. If relocation is absolutely necessary, gently move them by scooping up the bark or leaf they are resting on.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- They generally do not require any brumation period when kept in a controlled captive environment. Maintaining stable and appropriately warm temperatures ensures continuous year-round activity and breeding success. It is important to avoid extreme cold to prevent potential and sudden colony crashes.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- Molting occurs in two very distinct phases to allow the isopod continuous mobility during the process. Adequate environmental humidity is absolutely essential for them to successfully shed their old exoskeleton without complications. They will usually consume their freshly shed skin in order to rapidly reclaim lost calcium.
