Borneo Isopod (Cubaris sp.)
Cubaris sp. 'Borneo'
The Cubaris 'Borneo'. A large armored and shy jewel isopod from the asphyxiating caves of the Asian island. Very similar in titanic proportions to a Jupiter, but it sports a less lively and more monolithic livery, of a dark anthracite gray or lead black, embellished at the lower edges and on the head by a spectral golden yellow-cream. Robust but dependent on advanced rotting wood and very high humidity, it is an animal of absolute darkness and Elizabethan isolation terrariums.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lethal unexplored jungles, rotting asphyxiating karst caves and muddy sediments of the island of Borneo.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Armadillidae. (Giant Shadow Isopod). It belongs to the mutations/species related to the large Asian two-tone Cubaris but deviates from the fluorescent brilliance preferring mournful shades and mineral mimicry. Darker than the Pak Chong, more homogeneous than the Shiro Utsuri, the Borneo is a purist of slate gray that vanishes into calcareous sediments.
Behavior and Habits: Terrified curled lead ingots. Clumsy but incredibly peaceful and introverted. It develops entire colonies assembled in the lower part of a soggy piece of wood, slowly feeding on the fetid lichens. When surprised by the light, it falls playing dead, snapping shut into an impenetrable ceramic circle to defend itself from the predators of the rainforest.
Morphology: Immense total enameled dome (Up to 0.7 inches / 1.8 cm). Titanic shell for a Cubaris (Jupiter dimensions). The background is a deep Lead Black or very dark shiny Smoke Gray. No extravagant neon colors, but austere elegance: the extreme bands of the body (rear, head and low skirt) are bathed in an Antique Yellow nuanced in cream white, giving the illusion of opaque golden edges that do not break the Asian majesty.

Profil der terrestrischen Wirbellosen
- Diät
- Detritivore
- This species thrives on a varied diet rich in decaying organic matter. They primarily consume high-quality leaf litter and soft rotting wood. Supplemental calcium and occasional vegetable scraps are essential for maintaining proper health and a strong exoskeleton.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 1.2 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are robust terrestrial invertebrates that thrive in a well-maintained terrarium environment. A distinct moisture gradient is crucial to prevent both fatal dehydration and harmful fungal infections. They spend the vast majority of their time navigating the complex microhabitats of the damp forest floor.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- This species is primarily active during the night and the dimmer crepuscular hours. They typically remain hidden during the peak daylight hours to conserve vital moisture and avoid predators. Providing a natural day-night light cycle helps regulate their natural foraging and resting behaviors.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- They are fundamentally social and gregarious animals that perform exceptionally well in densely populated colonies. Conspecific interactions are frequent, and they can usually be found aggregating together in tight groups in the most humid corners of their enclosure, which aids in collective moisture conservation.
- Reproduktion
- Marsupial
- Reproduction occurs consistently throughout the year when kept under optimal terrarium conditions. Females incubate their developing eggs within a specialized ventral brood pouch known as a marsupium. The young emerge as fully formed miniatures and require stable moisture to survive their initial delicate molts.
- Giftig
- No
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Tolerant
- Handling should be kept to an absolute minimum to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Their incredibly delicate bodies and limbs can be easily injured by improper or forceful grasping. If relocation is absolutely necessary, gently move them by scooping up the bark or leaf they are resting on.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- They generally do not require any brumation period when kept in a controlled captive environment. Maintaining stable and appropriately warm temperatures ensures continuous year-round activity and breeding success. It is important to avoid extreme cold to prevent potential and sudden colony crashes.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- Molting occurs in two very distinct phases to allow the isopod continuous mobility during the process. Adequate environmental humidity is absolutely essential for them to successfully shed their old exoskeleton without complications. They will usually consume their freshly shed skin in order to rapidly reclaim lost calcium.
