Argentine Black and White Tegu (Blue Tegu)
Salvator merianae
The Blue Tegu is a color and geographic variant of the Argentine tegu characterized by high-contrast coloration and slightly smaller adult size compared to the ancestral Black and White form. Genetically, these animals display a gray-blue, platinum, or pure white background coloration, interrupted by distinct black bands and a characteristic dark, uniform coloring on the snout, commonly referred to as a 'singlet' or single spot, which visually distinguishes them from traditional tegus. Hatchlings are born with a bright green coloration on the snout that quickly fades after the first sheds to give way to the typical bluish or platinum shade. While they grow less than other Argentine tegus (usually reaching a length between ninety and one hundred and twenty centimeters), Blue Tegus remain large lizards that require monumental setups. Adults need spacious terrariums with a deep and moist substrate that allows them to dig and burrow, a strong heating source associated with high levels of environmental humidity (between seventy and ninety percent) to prevent shedding problems and promote skin health, and a rich, balanced omnivorous diet.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Omnivore
- Blue Tegus are opportunistic omnivores with a strong carnivorous bias as juveniles, which shifts as adults to include more plant matter. Their diet should include a variety of insects (roaches, crickets), lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and fruits like berries, squash, and leafy greens, which should make up about 30% of the adult diet. Proper calcium and multivitamin supplementation is crucial to support their rapid growth and maintain skin and bone health.

- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are heavy-bodied terrestrial lizards. While juveniles may climb occasionally, adults stay firmly on the ground and enjoy burrowing into deep substrate.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Diurnal
- Argentine Tegus are strictly diurnal, highly intelligent, and very active foragers. They require massive enclosures and frequent mental stimulation during the day.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- It is a diurnal lizard, extremely intelligent and curious, known for developing a strong bond with keepers if handled regularly. With consistent training and gentle handling from a young age, it shows an exceptionally calm and tolerant temperament. However, its high intelligence requires the inclusion of environmental enrichment to stimulate its mind and prevent stereotypic behaviors due to boredom.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Breeding Blue Tegus in captivity requires a winter rest period (brumation) at cooler temperatures to stimulate reproductive instincts. After spring mating, the female builds a damp nest using substrate and leaves, where she deposits 15 to 40 eggs. The eggs should be removed and incubated at approximately 29-30°C (84-86°F) with constant humidity near 90% for about 60 days until hatching.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Expert only
- Known as the 'dogs of the reptile world', well-socialized tegus are incredibly tame and docile. However, due to their massive size and powerful jaws, they require experienced keepers.
- Brumation
- Erforderlich
- They undergo a profound, required brumation (hibernation) that can last up to 6 months. During this time, they will completely bury themselves and sleep continuously.
- Häutung
- Regular
- They shed their skin in large patches rather than one piece. Providing an ambient moderate to high humidity, along with a deep, damp substrate for burrowing, ensures a clean shed.
