Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the savannas, grasslands, and forest edges of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. They are terrestrial and active burrowers, digging deep underground dens.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Teiidae. Salvator merianae. Renowned for their high cognitive intelligence, problem-solving skills, and distinct personality.
Behavior and Habits: Diurnal and active. They can be trained to recognize their names or targets. Adults can be very docile with regular handling, but juveniles are often skittish. They go through a defensive phase during puberty ("Tegu-erty"). They undergo a long winter brumation.
Morphology: Massive, heavily built lizard reaching 120-150 cm in length. Mature muscles in males develop prominent jowls (cheek muscles). Skin features beaded scales in a stark black and white banded pattern.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: Extremely large, custom-built enclosure (minimum 240x120x120 cm). Provide a deep layer (30-40 cm) of damp substrate (soil, coco-fiber, sand mix) to allow natural burrowing. Include a heavy, giant water basin for soaking.
Lighting and Heating: Provide a strong temperature gradient. Cool side at 24-26°C. Basking spot must reach 40-45°C using a cluster of halogen bulbs. High-output UVB lighting (Arcadia 12% or 14% T5) is mandatory. Night drop to 20-22°C.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high humidity (70-80%) to prevent shedding issues. Mist substrate regularly. Provide a clean water basin large enough for the lizard to submerge.
Feeding and Supplementation: Voracious omnivores. Juveniles eat insects, whole fish, and pinkies. Adults consume thawed rats, quail, raw fish, eggs, and fruits (berries, mango). Dust meals with calcium and D3 weekly. Limit fatty meats to avoid obesity.
Compatibility: Solitary. House individually. Cohabitation is stressful and can lead to severe territorial fights or injury.
Health and Common Diseases: Prone to metabolic bone disease (MBD) if UVB/calcium is insufficient. Obesity is a common issue in captivity. Ensure correct brumation parameters.

Reptilienprofil
- Diät
- Omnivore
- The Argentine Black and White Tegu is a highly opportunistic, heavy-bodied omnivore with a massive appetite. Their diet dynamically changes with age; juveniles require a high-protein diet heavily focused on insects like crickets, roaches, and ground meats. As they reach their massive adult size, their palate broadens significantly to include whole prey items (rodents, quail, fish), various cooked eggs, organ meats, and a diverse array of fresh fruits like grapes, melons, and berries. Variety and proper calcium supplementation are paramount.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 120 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- The Argentine Black and White Tegu is firmly terrestrial, preferring to dwell on the forest floor, hiding among leaf litter and ground-level structures to forage and seek shelter.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Diurnal
- The Argentine Black and White Tegu is primarily active during the day, typical of diurnal species that rely on light to navigate, forage, and interact.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- While Tegus are exceptionally famous in the pet trade for their high intelligence and dog-like taming potential with human keepers, they are not naturally social animals with each other. In the wild, they are solitary wanderers that only congregate for mating. Adult males are highly territorial and can engage in brutal combat over dominance. While some keepers successfully cohabitate females in massive, room-sized enclosures, solitary housing is the safest and most standard practice.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Tegus reproduce oviparously and are remarkably unique among reptiles for their ability to elevate their body temperature through endothermy during the reproductive season. Females are renowned for their intricate nest-building behaviors, gathering vast amounts of substrate and vegetation to construct large, composting mound nests. They lay large clutches of 20 to 50 eggs inside this mound, and actively guard the nest site, relying on the heat generated by the decomposing vegetation to incubate the eggs.
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Tolerant
- Known for its generally docile nature, the Argentine Black and White Tegu tolerates handling relatively well when approached calmly, making interaction safe for both animal and keeper.
- Brumation
- Erforderlich
- A winter brumation period is necessary for the Argentine Black and White Tegu to maintain long-term health and stimulate breeding, requiring controlled temperature reductions over several months.
- Häutung
- Regular
- The Argentine Black and White Tegu sheds its skin periodically and benefits from moderate humidity spikes or a localized humid microclimate to help loosen the old skin effectively.
