Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Thailand and surrounding islands, where they inhabit mossy rock crevices and dark areas in tropical rainforests.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Armadillidae. Features a high-domed, armored body reaching up to 1.5 cm in length. The dorsal carapace is a glossy dark grey or deep black, bordered along the lateral flanges (epimera) by a bright cherry-red or fiery orange coloration.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily fossorial and nocturnal. They are relatively active compared to other Cubaris species but remain shy under direct light, preferring to burrow into the substrate rather than roll into a ball. They spend most of their life cycle under decomposing wood and leaf litter.
Morphology: Sexes are morphologically identical. Sexual dimorphism is not externally visible, requiring examination of pleopods under magnification to distinguish adults.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Terrarium Setup: Requires a tropical setup with deep substrate (7-10 cm) consisting of a moisture-retaining organic mix of soil, peat, and decayed wood. Provide limestone pieces, porous rocks, live moss, and a thick layer of oak leaves.
Lighting and Heating: Avoid direct light. Maintain stable tropical temperatures between 23 and 28°C. Supplementary heating is essential during winter, as cold conditions can halt feeding and colony growth.
Humidity and Hydration: Requires high humidity levels (75-90%). A fine balance is critical; the substrate must be damp but never waterlogged or muddy. Ensure good ventilation using fine mesh screens.
Feeding and Supplementation: Detritivores feeding on leaf litter, decaying wood, and moss. Supplement their diet with high-quality protein (such as krill or fish flakes) and a constant source of calcium (cuttlebone mixed into the soil).
Compatibility: Best kept in a species-only display setup. They are sensitive and should not be housed with predatory amphibians or faster, dominant European isopods that could outcompete them for resources.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to molting failure (ecdysis issues) if humidity levels drop or calcium is lacking. An incomplete molt can trap the isopod inside its old exoskeleton, leading to death.

Profil der terrestrischen Wirbellosen
- Diät
- Detritivore
- This species thrives on a varied diet rich in decaying organic matter. They primarily consume high-quality leaf litter and soft rotting wood. Supplemental calcium and occasional vegetable scraps are essential for maintaining proper health and a strong exoskeleton.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 1.9 cm
- Lebensstil/Mikrohabitat
- Terrestrial
- They are robust terrestrial invertebrates that thrive in a well-maintained terrarium environment. A distinct moisture gradient is crucial to prevent both fatal dehydration and harmful fungal infections. They spend the vast majority of their time navigating the complex microhabitats of the damp forest floor.
- Aktivitätszyklus
- Nocturnal
- This species is primarily active during the night and the dimmer crepuscular hours. They typically remain hidden during the peak daylight hours to conserve vital moisture and avoid predators. Providing a natural day-night light cycle helps regulate their natural foraging and resting behaviors.
- Sozialität
- Solitary
- A social species that relies on the presence of a colony to establish stable microclimates within their substrate. They are peaceful towards one another and often congregate in preferred, sheltered spots.
- Reproduktion
- Marsupial
- Reproduction occurs consistently throughout the year when kept under optimal terrarium conditions. Females incubate their developing eggs within a specialized ventral brood pouch known as a marsupium. The young emerge as fully formed miniatures and require stable moisture to survive their initial delicate molts.
- Giftig
- No
- Handhabungstoleranz
- Tolerant
- Handling should be kept to an absolute minimum to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Their incredibly delicate bodies and limbs can be easily injured by improper or forceful grasping. If relocation is absolutely necessary, gently move them by scooping up the bark or leaf they are resting on.
- Brumation
- Nicht erforderlich
- They generally do not require any brumation period when kept in a controlled captive environment. Maintaining stable and appropriately warm temperatures ensures continuous year-round activity and breeding success. It is important to avoid extreme cold to prevent potential and sudden colony crashes.
- Häutung
- Regular
- Molting occurs in two very distinct phases to allow the isopod continuous mobility during the process. Adequate environmental humidity is absolutely essential for them to successfully shed their old exoskeleton without complications. They will usually consume their freshly shed skin in order to rapidly reclaim lost calcium.
