Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in southern South America (Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay River basins). Tolerates a wide range of habitats: streams, oxbow lakes, moderate rivers, usually among rocks and wood.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Pike Cichlid (Crenicichla lepidota). Medium-sized pike cichlid. Distinctly cylindrical and elongated body shape, enormous protrusible mouth, perfect hydrodynamic design for an ambush predator.
Social Behavior: Territorial and predatory. Lives isolated or in a fixed pair. Aggressive towards conspecifics and totally intolerant of any intruder entering its den.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Olive-green or brownish livery, with a clear broken black longitudinal line running from the eye to the tail. Dark spot bordered by a light edge ("ocellus") behind the gill cover. Adult females boast a bright white-bordered dorsal fin and a pinkish abdomen when breeding.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: Large aquarium (minimum 120-150 cm / 48-60 inches). Decor based on heavy intertwined wood, covered terracotta pots or hidden PVC pipes to provide safe dens. Free space for mid-water swimming.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore/Piscivore (eats fish). In the aquarium they accept earthworms, shelled shrimp, mussels, silversides, crickets and various insects. Some specimens adapt to large sticks for carnivorous cichlids.
Water Quality: It is a very robust subtropical species, which tolerates winters at 18°C (64°F). This makes it poorly suited for warm Amazonian aquariums; it prefers cool and oxygenated temperatures (22-24°C / 71-75°F is ideal).
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Instantly swallows anyone who fits in its mouth. Can only coexist with fish too large to be eaten (large Geophagus, armored Loricariids, large Characins like Metynnis).
Aquarium Breeding: They lay hundreds of eggs inside deep caves, often in pipes. The female keeps watch inside the den, the male explodes in furious aggression against anyone approaching the perimeter.
Risks and Diseases: If the aquarium is too warm all year round (e.g. 28°C / 82°F), their metabolism suffers a drastic collapse, shortening their life. Risk of lethal marital quarrels if space is lacking.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Semi-aggressive
- Crenicichla lepidota is highly aggressive, territorial, and predatory, embodying the classic pike cichlid personality. They are incredibly intelligent and aware of their surroundings, often learning to recognize their owners. Their aggressive nature demands a carefully planned setup, but they reward dedicated aquarists with fascinating behavior.
- Diät
- Omnivore
- As an apex predator in miniature, Crenicichla lepidota requires a meaty diet of high-quality protein. In captivity, they can be trained to accept large carnivore pellets, but they thrive on frozen or live foods. Feeder fish, earthworms, and large krill are excellent staples to keep them well-fed and active.
- Lebenserwartung
- 8-10 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 18 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Pair
- It is best to keep Crenicichla lepidota as a single, bonded pair. Forcing multiple adults into the same aquarium usually results in severe aggression and the eventual death of the subordinate fish. Buying a group of juveniles and letting a pair naturally form is the most successful method.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- Adult Crenicichla lepidota should be fed one large meal per day or every other day, simulating their natural gorge-and-fast feeding patterns. Juveniles require daily feeding to support their rapid growth rates. Removing uneaten meaty foods immediately is crucial to avoid sudden ammonia spikes.
- Bioload
- Medium to High
- Crenicichla lepidota generates a significant bioload due to their predatory nature and protein-rich diet. These active fish require robust filtration to handle the organic waste they produce. Frequent, large water changes are mandatory to keep nitrate levels low and maintain a healthy environment.
- Fluss
- Stagnant
- These cichlids appreciate moderate to strong water currents, reflecting their natural riverine habitats. Good flow helps maintain high dissolved oxygen levels, which is vital for Crenicichla lepidota. Powerheads or strong filter outputs can be used to create the dynamic environment they prefer.
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- Crenicichla lepidota poses a very high jump risk, as they are powerful swimmers that can launch themselves out of the water to escape aggression or catch prey. A heavy, completely sealed aquarium lid is an absolute necessity. Even small gaps around filter tubes should be covered to prevent tragic escapes.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- Breeding Crenicichla lepidota is notoriously difficult and requires a dedicated species setup. They are cave spawners, so providing appropriately sized PVC pipes or rock caves is necessary. Both parents are fiercely protective of the fry and will attack any intruders with extreme prejudice.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Extremely aggressive
- Pike cichlids are highly predatory and extremely aggressive toward smaller fish. Crenicichla lepidota should only be kept with robust, similarly sized, or larger species that cannot be swallowed. They can also exhibit intense conspecific aggression, meaning careful planning is required if keeping them with other cichlids.
- Tankfüllstand
- Middle/Bottom
- They are primarily middle to bottom dwellers, often hovering in the water column waiting to ambush prey. Crenicichla lepidota needs plenty of structure, such as large pieces of driftwood and rocks, to establish their territory. They will fiercely defend their chosen spot against any perceived threats.
