Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Orinoco basins in Venezuela and the Guianas. It wanders in the tiny and ephemeral streams covered by the Amazon canopy, whose waters, mainly acidic, flow slowly over thick piles of debris and fallen vegetable echoes.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the Callichthyidae family. Miniature Corydoras, whose dimensions barely reach 4 cm (1.6 inches). Classic round-snouted profile, very stocky and tall in its lateral projection.
Social Behavior: Proverbial shyness. Breeding singles or couples is deleterious and cruel. Requires compact swarms (10-15 specimens) to find the courage to actively sift the substrate. Frantic but measured and harmless movements.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Its name "osteocarus" ("bone head") derives from the strong evidence of the cranial bony plates. Pale gray-bronze background color finely dotted with black and brown; absence of large dark saddles. Females stand out over males due to the extremely swollen belly.

Aquarium Setup: No compromises on the substrate: very fine river sand necessary to avoid the amputation of the short barbels. Mandatory creation of interwoven wood canopies (Manila) and insertion of Catappa to yield precious humic acids.
Diet and Feeding: Being the mouthpart minute, the diet must be crushed or adapted. Offer very fine sinking and granular foods mixed bi-weekly with microworms, brine shrimp, and tiny bloodworms strictly thawed and washed.
Water Quality: Temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F). Very low hardness (GH 2-12). Neutral or weakly acidic pH (6.0 - 7.2) is essential. The fish does not tolerate spikes in pollutants (NO2/NH3) in the bottom, demanding oversized filtration for small aquariums.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: The ideal dwarf Corydoras. Irreplaceable for tanks of Tetras (Neons, Ember tetras), South American Rasboras, mignon Loricariids, and small peaceful cichlids. Aggressive cichlids, or fish with a strong burrowing instinct, would suppress it with stress.
Aquarium Breeding: Stimulated by simulating cold downpours. Witnessing the very tight T-position ritual rewards the observer with small but resistant clutches, anchored to the glass or on moss. Instinct of predation on their own eggs is very high: intervene immediately.
Risks and Diseases: Sharp calcareous bottoms lead to the rapid bacterial breakdown of the whiskers, followed by deadly starvation. Enormous vulnerability to Copper-based medicines or anti-mycosis shock treatments. Intolerance to saline changes.
