Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the lush, wet coastal rainforests (Mata Atlântica) of southeastern Brazil. A large terrestrial, fossorial frog that spends its life buried in deep leaf litter and moist soils on the dark forest floor.
Taxonomy and Genetics: The largest of all Ceratophrys species, reaching 15–20 cm in adult size. It features a massive head, an enormous mouth, and prominent cutaneous horns above the eyes. Dorsal color ranges from emerald green to olive and brown with dark spots.
Behavior and Habits: Solitary, ambush predator. It remains buried in leaf litter, leaving only its eyes and horns exposed to surprise prey. It does not hop; instead, it lunges forward to swallow prey whole. Males produce a loud, cow-like bellow at night.
Morphology: Sexual dimorphism is highly pronounced: adult females are massive, circular giants, while adult males are smaller, more slender, and possess dark throat coloration and nuptial pads during the breeding season.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Require a spacious terrestrial terrarium of at least 80x45x45 cm. Provide a deep substrate (at least 15 cm) of moist organic peat moss or coconut fiber, covered with a thick layer of dry oak or catappa leaf litter for burrowing. Include a very shallow, large water dish.
Lighting and Heating: Require warm, tropical conditions. Maintain daytime temperatures of 25–28°C with a basking spot. Avoid under-tank heating mats as they can burn the frog when it digs. Provide a night drop to 22–24°C. Low-level UVB (5%) is recommended.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high relative humidity of 75–85% via daily misting. Efficient ventilation is critical to prevent stagnant conditions, which can lead to bacterial skin infections (Red Leg syndrome). Use dechlorinated water.
Feeding and Supplementation: Voracious carnivorous predators. Offer live locusts, large roaches, earthworms, and occasional rodents (pinkies or fuzzy mice). Always use long tongs to feed them, as their bite is strong and painful. Dust prey with calcium and vitamin D3 supplements regularly.
Compatibility: Strictly cannibalistic. Must be housed individually at all times. They will attempt to consume anything that moves, including tankmates of their own size. Never house them with other species.
Health and Common Diseases: Highly sensitive to ammonia toxicity from their own waste; change the substrate frequently. Do not handle them with bare hands as skin residues can harm them. Watch for Red Leg syndrome and treat immediately with clean water and veterinary care.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- The Brazilian Horned Frog is a formidable ambush predator with a legendary appetite and a specialized diet that includes large prey. Their massive mouths allow them to consume almost anything that fits inside, including large insects, other frogs, small reptiles, and even small rodents. They employ a sit-and-wait hunting strategy, burying themselves in leaf litter with only their eyes and snouts exposed. When an unsuspecting meal wanders past, they strike with explosive speed, grabbing the prey with powerful jaws.
- Expectativa de vida
- 10-15 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 18 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Fossorial
- These frogs are strongly fossorial and terrestrial, utilizing their powerful hind legs to dig backwards into the substrate. They bury themselves in loose soil or leaf litter with only their eyes and the top of their heads exposed, perfectly camouflaged as they await passing prey on the forest floor.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Crepuscular
- While they can occasionally be active during the day if food is near, they are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal ambush predators. They spend the majority of their time lying in wait for prey to pass by, becoming slightly more alert and responsive during the evening and night hours.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- These frogs are highly terrestrial and spend the vast majority of their time partially buried in the damp substrate of the forest floor. They are notoriously aggressive when provoked and will puff up their bodies, open their massive mouths, and even lunge or bite if they feel threatened. Due to their sit-and-wait lifestyle, they move very little unless hunting or migrating to breeding pools. They are solitary animals that do not tolerate the presence of other frogs, often exhibiting cannibalistic tendencies.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Reproduction generally coincides with heavy seasonal rains that form large, temporary pools in the forest. Males produce deep, resonant calls to attract females to these breeding sites. During amplexus, the female lays hundreds to thousands of eggs in the shallow water, which are quickly fertilized by the male. The eggs hatch rapidly, giving the developing tadpoles a head start in their race to metamorphose before the ephemeral pools dry out.
- Toxicidade
- Harmless
- The Brazilian Horned Frog is non-toxic and lacks any poisonous skin secretions. Instead of chemical defenses, they rely on aggressive displays, powerful bites, and excellent camouflage to protect themselves from predators. Their bite can be surprisingly painful due to their strong jaws and bony tooth-like projections in their mouths. Handling should be avoided or done with extreme caution, primarily to avoid stressing the animal and risking a defensive bite.
- Estágio de vida
- Metamorphosis
- The aquatic tadpoles are incredibly voracious and highly carnivorous right from the start, often preying on smaller tadpoles of their own or other species. They grow at an astonishing rate, fueled by their high-protein diet. Metamorphosis is completed in a matter of weeks, producing froglets that already possess the rounded body shape and large mouths of the adults. These juveniles continue to grow rapidly on land, adopting the solitary, ambush-predator lifestyle of their parents.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- With caution
- Handling is generally not advised and should only be done when necessary. They have a defensive temperament and a powerful bite reflex; they will often attempt to eat anything that moves in front of them, including fingers. Their skin is also sensitive to human touch, and they can easily be stressed by forced interaction.
- Brumação
- In the wild, they may enter a state of estivation or brumation during the dry, cooler season, burying deep and forming a cocoon of shed skin to retain moisture. In captivity, maintaining stable, optimal temperatures year-round usually prevents this, and forced brumation is generally unnecessary unless attempting to trigger breeding.
- Muda
- Regular
- They routinely shed their skin, utilizing a combination of body contortions and their mouth to pull the old layer off and consume it. Maintaining a damp but not completely saturated substrate (around 60-80% humidity) ensures the skin remains healthy and sheds easily, preventing the buildup of dead skin that can lead to infections.
