It inhabits slow-moving forest streams, shaded creeks, and shallow shorelines dense with leaf litter, where the water is extremely soft, acidic, and stained tea-color with organic tannins.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Cichlidae, subfamily Geophaginae. It is a small cichlid with an elongated body; males reach about 5.5 cm in length, whereas females remain smaller, topping out around 3.5 cm. It is characterized by parallel horizontal red lines running along the flanks of mature males.
Social Behavior: A territorial yet generally peaceful species when kept with non-conspecific fish of similar size. Males establish individual territories that they defend vigorously, especially during the spawning phase. Keeping them in pairs or small harems is highly recommended in appropriate aquariums.
