Description de l'espèce
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Amblyeleotris bellicauda is native to the tropical regions of the Western Pacific Ocean. It has been documented primarily in the waters surrounding New Caledonia, Fiji, and within the Coral Sea. This goby inhabits shallow sandy areas of reef flats, lagoons, and the bases of coral reefs, settling in protected locations featuring fine sand mixed with shell fragments.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Gobiidae, it is a classic representative of the symbiotic shrimpgobies. The body is slender, elongated, and slightly compressed. The eyes are positioned high on the head, granting a wide field of view. Its pelvic fins are partially fused to help it rest on the sandy bottom. The species reaches a maximum size of only 7.0 centimeters.
Social Behavior: Exhibits localized territorial behavior around its burrow, which it shares in a mutualistic symbiosis with an Alpheus pistol shrimp. It is peaceful toward other tankmates but territorial against similar gobies. It spends most of the time at the entrance of the burrow, acting as a sentinel while the shrimp excavates.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body has a light beige background color crossed by five distinct orange or brown vertical bands. The caudal fin is decorated with a unique pattern of dark spots and yellowish hues, which gives the species its scientific name 'bellicauda' (beautiful tail). There is no obvious visual sexual dimorphism.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 80 liters (approx. 20 gallons). The substrate must consist of fine sand mixed with coral rubble and shell fragments, which the partner shrimp uses to reinforce the walls of the shared burrow. Secure the rockwork to prevent collapse due to excavation. A tight-fitting lid is essential as the goby can jump when startled.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. In nature, it feeds on small invertebrates drifting near its burrow. In captivity, feed it small frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, copepods, and lobster eggs. It will also accept fine dry pellets or crushed flakes. Feeding should ideally be directed near the burrow entrance.
Water Quality: Demands standard marine parameters and stability. Maintain water temperature between 22°C and 26°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, specific gravity between 1.023 and 1.025, and carbonate hardness (KH) between 8 and 12 dKH. Regular water changes and a good filtration system are required to keep nutrients low.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe and compatible with corals and ornamental invertebrates. It is highly recommended to keep it with its symbiotic shrimp partner (such as Alpheus bellulus or Alpheus ochrostriatus). It fits well in community tanks with small, peaceful fish like clownfish, anthias, small wrasses, and blennies.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is extremely difficult. A compatible pair will lay eggs inside the shrimp's burrow. The male guards the eggs until they hatch. The newly hatched larvae are planktonic and require microscopic live food, such as rotifers, to survive their initial development stages.
Risks and Diseases: The main threat is jumping out of the tank if startled. Without a partner shrimp or appropriate caves, the goby can become highly stressed and remain hidden. It is susceptible to common marine external parasites like ich (Cryptocaryon) and velvet (Oodinium), which should be treated in a separate tank.

Profil de poisson
- Tempérament
- Territorial
- The Amblyeleotris bellicauda possesses a generally peaceful yet somewhat timid and cautious temperament. It relies completely on its burrow as a safe haven, retreating instantly at any sign of perceived danger. In the wild and in captivity, it acts as the vigilant lookout while its visually impaired shrimp partner maintains their shared home.
- Régime alimentaire
- Carnivore
- In its natural habitat, the Amblyeleotris bellicauda functions as a micro-predator, consuming benthic invertebrates and passing zooplankton. Captive specimens typically adapt quickly to a carnivorous diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and sinking micropellets. Ensuring that food reaches the lower levels of the aquarium is essential for their long-term nutritional health.
- Espérance de vie
- 3-5 years
- Taille adulte
- 7 cm
- Ratio des sexes
- Solitary
- It is generally advisable to keep the Amblyeleotris bellicauda singly unless you can acquire a confirmed mated pair. Attempting to house two males or incompatible individuals in the same tank often leads to severe territorial disputes. A harmonious pair will usually share a single burrow and collaborate with the same pistol shrimp.
- Fréquence d'alimentation
- Twice daily
- To support their metabolic needs, the Amblyeleotris bellicauda should be offered small meals one to two times daily. Frequent, appropriately sized feedings are far more beneficial than infrequent large meals. Target feeding near the entrance of their burrow often yields the best results and ensures they outcompete faster tank mates.
- Charge biologique
- Low
- The Amblyeleotris bellicauda has a minimal bioload, making it an excellent candidate for reef aquariums of various sizes. Because of its small physical stature and efficient metabolism, it contributes very little waste to the water column. This characteristic helps aquarists maintain pristine water parameters without putting undue stress on biological filtration systems.
- Courant
- Strong
- The Amblyeleotris bellicauda strongly prefers areas of the tank with low to moderate water flow. Gentle currents allow them to hover comfortably above the substrate without expending excessive energy. Furthermore, calmer water facilitates clear tactile communication with their symbiotic shrimp partner.
- Risque de saut
- Yes
- Like most members of its genus, the Amblyeleotris bellicauda presents a significant risk of jumping out of an open aquarium. Startling events, such as abrupt lighting changes or aggressive encounters, can trigger a panic response. A tight-fitting lid or a specialized mesh screen is a mandatory requirement to prevent loss of life.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- The Amblyeleotris bellicauda is a demersal spawner, carefully depositing its eggs within the protected confines of its substrate burrow. After fertilization, the male typically assumes the role of guarding the clutch until the fry hatch. While captive breeding is quite rare in home aquaria, it can sometimes be achieved in dedicated breeding setups with pristine conditions.
- Compatibilité et compagnons
- Reef safe
- This goby exhibits a highly peaceful demeanor and thrives in community setups alongside other tranquil fish. The Amblyeleotris bellicauda is particularly prized for its ability to form a fascinating mutualistic bond with alpheid pistol shrimp. It is imperative to avoid housing them with large, boisterous, or predatory tank mates that could intimidate or consume them.
- Niveau dans le bac
- Bottom
- As a dedicated benthic species, the Amblyeleotris bellicauda spends the vast majority of its life resting directly on or hovering slightly above the substrate. They establish their territory around a primary burrow entrance and rarely venture into the middle or upper water column. Providing a deep bed of fine or mixed-grade sand is crucial to support their natural behaviors.
