Methylene Blue
Active Ingredient: Methylene Blue (Methylthioninium chloride)
Methylene Blue is a high-grade antiseptic and dye with a long, proven history in fishkeeping and aquaculture. It functions as a powerful anti-fungal, anti-protozoan, and antiparasitic treatment. Its unique chemical properties allow it to act as an oxygen carrier, making it invaluable in treating gasping fish and chemical poisonings.
Indications
- Fungal Infections: Primarily used against Saprolegnia and other water molds affecting fish and fish eggs.
- External Parasites: Effective in treating protozoans such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich), Oodinium (Velvet), and Chilodonella.
- Toxicity Recovery: Treats ammonia, nitrite, and cyanide poisoning by converting methemoglobin in the blood back to oxygen-carrying hemoglobin.
- Transport & Stress: Acts as a mild tranquilizer and stress reliever during transport.
Dosage & Application
- Hospital Tank (Continuous Bath): Add 1-2 ml of a 2.3% aqueous solution per 10 liters of water (approx. 2 drops/gallon). Maintain for 3 to 5 days. Perform a 50% water change before redosing if necessary.
- Short Dip (High Concentration): Place the fish in a separate bucket with 10 ml of a 2.3% solution per 10 liters of water for a maximum of 10 seconds. Monitor the fish constantly and return to the main tank immediately if distressed.
- Egg Protection: Add 1-2 drops of 2.3% solution per 3 liters of water to the breeding tank to prevent fungus growth on non-fertile eggs.
Safety Notes
- DO NOT use in the main display aquarium. Methylene Blue destroys nitrifying bacteria in biological filters, leading to ammonia spikes.
- It permanently stains silicone, decorations, gravel, and acrylic tanks.
- Remove all live plants and invertebrates (shrimp, snails, corals) prior to use.
- Turn off UV sterilizers and remove carbon/chemical filtration during treatment.
Leaflet Extract
Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dark place. Methylene Blue is highly toxic to biological filters and stains porous materials permanently. Do not use simultaneously with Erythromycin or Tetracycline.
