Antibiotic
Kanamycin / KanaPlex
Active Ingredient: Kanamycin Sulfate
Kanamycin Sulfate is a strong aminoglycoside antibiotic that is absorbed through the gills and skin of fish. It is highly active against a wide variety of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria. It is highly stable and effective in both freshwater and marine environments, remaining active even at alkaline pH levels where other antibiotics degrade.
Indications
- Severe Bacterial Infections: Treats Columnaris (saddleback, mouth fungus), Hemorrhagic Septicemia (blood streaks in fins/body), dropsy, fin/tail rot, and internal bacterial infections.
- Control of Mycobacteria: Helps control the spread of fish tuberculosis (Mycobacterium).
Dosage & Application
- Water Column Treatment: Dose 125 to 250 mg per 20 liters (5 US gallons) of water. Repeat every 48 hours for a total of 3 doses (6 days). Perform a 25-50% water change before each dose.
- Medicated Food (Recommended for Internal Infections): Mix 1 measure of Kanamycin with 1 tablespoon of food (frozen or pellets) and a binder (like Seachem Focus) to prevent leaching. Feed once daily for 7 to 10 days.
Safety Notes
- May affect biological filtration: Can impact nitrifying bacteria when dosed in the water column. Monitor ammonia and nitrite levels closely.
- Safe for plants and invertebrates (shrimp, snails), but caution is advised in marine reef aquariums.
- Aminoglycosides can be harsh on fish kidneys (nephrotoxic); do not exceed the recommended dose or extend treatment beyond 10 days.
Leaflet Extract
Easily absorbed through fish skin and gills. Use with caution as it can crash the biological filter. Do not use for more than 10 days to avoid kidney damage (nephrotoxicity).
