Geographical Origin and Habitat: The camel shrimp, also known as the Durban dancing shrimp, is widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from the coast of East Africa and South Africa to the Great Barrier Reef, the Philippines, and southern Japan. It inhabits caves, crevices, and ledges on shallow coral reefs, often found in large colonies sheltered from direct sunlight.
Taxonomy: This species belongs to the order Decapoda and family Rhynchocinetidae. The genus Rhynchocinetes is characterized by a unique hinged rostrum that can move vertically, distinguishing it from other shrimp. Adults reach a maximum length of about 4 to 6 centimeters, featuring a distinct dorsal hump on the abdomen.
Social Behavior: Highly gregarious, camel shrimp live in large groups in the wild. In an aquarium setting, they should be kept in groups of three or more. Keeping them together encourages active behavior and reduces shyness, whereas single specimens will spend most of their time hidden deep within the rockwork.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The coloration is striking, composed of a complex lattice of bright red and white stripes accented by small white dots. Sexual dimorphism is present: adult males develop significantly larger and longer chelipeds (claws) compared to females, which they use for territorial displays and courtship.

Tank Setup: A well-established marine aquarium of at least 80 liters is recommended. The aquascape must include plenty of live rock arranged to form caves, overhangs, and shady crevices. Diet and Feeding: An opportunistic omnivore and detritivore. They are excellent scavengers, feeding on organic detritus, uneaten fish food, and algae. They will readily accept high-quality pellets, sinking wafers, and frozen foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
Water Quality: Requires standard reef water parameters: specific gravity of 1.023-1.025, pH of 8.1-8.4, and temperature between 22°C and 26°C. They are highly sensitive to copper treatments and rapid changes in salinity. Adequate levels of calcium, magnesium, and trace iodine are necessary for healthy shell shedding.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Peaceful towards fish and other non-predatory invertebrates. However, they are not strictly reef-safe as they are known to nip at soft corals (particularly Zoanthids), large polyp stony (LPS) corals, and sea anemones. They are best suited for fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) systems.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is extremely difficult. Females regularly carry fertile eggs under their abdomens, which hatch into free-swimming planktonic larvae. However, raising the larvae through their complex developmental stages requires specialized feeding regimes and is rarely successful in standard setups.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk occurs during the molting process. If iodine levels are depleted or water parameters are unstable, the shrimp may experience incomplete molts, which are fatal. They must not be housed with predatory fish such as triggerfish, hawkfish, groupers, or large wrasses that will readily eat them.
