Geographical Origin and Habitat: Echinometra mathaei is widely distributed throughout the vast tropical Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from the Red Sea and East African coast, across the Indian Ocean and the coral reefs of Indonesia and Australia, to the Hawaiian Islands and Polynesia. It primarily inhabits shallow coral reefs, lagoons, coastal reef flats, and intertidal zones exposed to strong wave action, at depths ranging from 0 to 15 meters. It lives wedged inside cavities it actively excavates in limestone rock.
Taxonomy: Taxonomically, it belongs to the class Echinoidea, order Camarodonta, family Echinometridae, and genus Echinometra. At a genetic level, several ecological variants have been identified within the Echinometra mathaei species complex, differing slightly in their burrowing habits and micro-habitat preferences. It is characterized by a robust, slightly oval test (shell) covered with short, sharp, highly mobile spines.
Social Behavior: This urchin is a solitary and predominantly nocturnal species. During daylight hours, it remains tightly anchored inside its rocky shelter (a hemispherical burrow it excavates over time using both the mechanical scraping of its spines and its specialized chewing apparatus, Aristotle's lantern). At dusk, it emerges to graze on surrounding rocks, usually returning to the same burrow before dawn. It displays no active social behavior.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The coloration of the spines is highly variable and can range from dark brown, olive green, and grey, to deep purple or dark red, often with lighter or whitish tips. The test (the hard body shell) is generally dark, almost black. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism between males and females, and the sex can only be determined during spawning events.

Tank Setup: Requires a mature marine aquarium of at least 100 liters, featuring plenty of well-consolidated and stable live rock. The most important setup requirement is the stability of the rockwork (reefscape): this urchin actively burrows into rock and constantly bulldozes small loose items or unattached corals, risking the collapse of unstable structures. Ensure all hard and soft corals are securely glued to the rocks using epoxy.
Diet and Feeding: It is a voracious and hardworking herbivore, highly beneficial for the biological control of nuisance algae. It feeds by constantly grazing on microalgae, turf algae, diatoms, and encrusting coralline algae from rocks and glass. If the aquarium lacks sufficient natural algae growth, its diet must be supplemented regularly with dried nori sheets secured to a clip or vegetable-based sinking pellets.
Water Quality: Requires stable and monitored water parameters: temperature 22-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.023-1.025, and KH 8-12. It is extremely sensitive to the presence of copper in the water (copper treatments are lethal) and is severely affected by sudden drops in salinity or specific gravity. Maintain adequate calcium and magnesium levels for spine and test development.
Compatibility and Tankmates: It is generally reef-safe, provided all corals are firmly attached to the rockwork to prevent them from being bulldozed or knocked over. It coexists peacefully with most calm marine fish and invertebrates. Never house it with known urchin predators, such as large triggerfish, large puffers (Tetraodontidae), and large wrasses.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is extremely rare and uncontrollable. They are broadcast spawners, releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously into the open water column, usually triggered by chemical cues or lunar cycles. Fertilization is external, and the resulting larvae (plutei) are planktonic. Rearing and settling the larvae requires specific conditions and feeds unavailable in home aquariums.
Risks and Diseases: The primary health risk is spine loss, which is a clear symptom of stress, poor water quality (elevated nitrates or phosphates), nutritional deficiencies, or osmotic shock from rapid water changes. If water parameters are not corrected, the test can become infected, leading to death. Handle the urchin carefully to avoid painful punctures from its sharp spines.
