Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is endemic to the coastal waters of Indonesia, with documented occurrences specifically around the Raja Ampat Islands in West Papua. It inhabits silty coastal reefs, sheltered bays, and areas featuring a mixture of sand, coral rubble, and large marine sponge colonies, particularly from the genus Oceanapia. Typically found at depths ranging from 10 to 35 meters, it uses these sponge formations as vital shelters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Pseudochromis ammeri belongs to the family Pseudochromidae. It features a slender, elongated body shape and large black eyes, which are typical traits of the dottyback genus. The maximum adult size is approximately 6 to 7 centimeters, making it a relatively small but exceptionally agile and fast-swimming fish.
Social Behavior: It is a solitary and highly territorial fish. It establishes a small territory centered around a preferred hiding place, such as a hollow sponge or a deep rock crevice. It will aggressively defend this territory against conspecifics and other fishes of similar size or shape, especially other dottyback species.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The coloration is characterized by a pale greyish-green to yellowish base, with a dark longitudinal stripe or dark speckling along the upper portion of the body, and yellow highlights on the face and caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is not prominent; adult males may appear slightly larger and exhibit brighter coloration during courtship displays.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Aquarium Setup: Requires a marine aquarium of at least 80 to 100 liters. It is crucial to provide a substantial amount of live rock to create caves, crevices, and narrow pathways where the fish can hide and feel secure. Replicating its natural environment with sponge formations is highly recommended. The substrate should consist of fine sand mixed with small pieces of coral rubble.
Diet and Feeding: A carnivorous species that requires a varied diet. In captivity, it should be fed frozen or fresh foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped table shrimp. Over time, it may accept high-quality dry pellets or flakes, but its primary diet must remain meat-based to maintain its color and health.
Water Quality: Standard reef parameters are essential: specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025, water temperature of 24 to 27 °C, pH levels between 8.1 and 8.4, and a dKH of 8 to 12. Efficient biological filtration, active protein skimming, and adequate water movement are necessary to maintain low levels of nitrates and zero ammonia.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Due to its semi-aggressive nature, it should not be kept with very small, docile tankmates like small gobies, nor with other dottybacks. Suitable tankmates include active, robust species such as larger wrasses, damselfish, or dwarf angelfish. It is generally reef-safe but may prey on tiny ornamental shrimp.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is difficult. They are cave-spawning egg-layers; the female deposits a sticky ball of eggs inside a cave, which the male fertilizes and aggressively guards, fanning them until they hatch. Raising the delicate, tiny larvae requires specialized live food cultures like rotifers.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to common marine parasites such as Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) and Marine Velvet (Amyloodinium) when stressed. A major risk is its propensity to jump out of the water; a tight-fitting lid or a fine mesh cover is absolutely mandatory for this species.

Fischprofil
- Temperament
- Aggressive
- Known for their bold, feisty, and often pugnacious personalities, they are not easily intimidated despite their small size. They will aggressively defend their chosen cave from intruders of almost any size. Because of their territorial nature, it is highly recommended to add them as one of the last fish in a community setup. Once established, they are very active and visible, providing dynamic movement.
- Diät
- Carnivore
- These fish are obligate carnivores that require a diet rich in meaty marine foods to thrive. They should be offered a varied menu including finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Providing a diverse diet is crucial for maintaining their vibrant coloration and overall health. They will also scavenge for small benthic copepods and amphipods within the live rock.
- Lebenserwartung
- 5-7 years
- Erwachsenengröße
- 6.5 cm
- Geschlechterverhältnis
- Solitary
- Dottybacks are typically protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning females can transition into males if needed. Because of their severe intra-species aggression, it is strongly recommended to keep only one individual per tank unless a bonded pair is acquired. Introducing two unsexed individuals often results in relentless fighting until only one survives. In very large systems with intricate rockwork, a male and female pair might coexist.
- Fütterungsfrequenz
- Twice daily
- To keep their metabolism healthy and mitigate potential aggression, they should be fed small portions one to two times per day. Overfeeding should be avoided to prevent excess waste accumulation in the tank. A well-fed dottyback is generally less prone to harassing its tank mates out of hunger. Target feeding can be utilized if they are reluctant to come out during the initial acclimation period.
- Bioload
- Low
- Dottybacks have a low to moderate bioload depending on their adult size and their heavily carnivorous diet. Their meaty food intake produces slightly more nitrogenous waste compared to similar-sized herbivores. Standard protein skimming and regular water changes will easily accommodate them. They are generally robust and add minimal strain to an established aquarium's filtration system.
- Fluss
- Moderate
- They prefer a moderate water flow that provides gentle circulation without overwhelming their swimming capabilities. Adequate flow helps transport food particles through the water column, stimulating their natural feeding responses. They appreciate areas of calmer water behind rock structures where they can rest out of the main current. Wavemakers simulating natural reef surges can provide an engaging environment.
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- Dottybacks have a very high propensity for jumping when startled, threatened, or chasing prey near the surface. A tight-fitting aquarium lid or a sturdy mesh screen is absolutely mandatory to prevent tragic losses. Even a slight gap near the filtration returns or overflow box can be enough for them to leap through. Extra care must be taken during tank maintenance or when the lights suddenly turn off.
- Reproduktion
- Oviparous
- They are demersal spawners and have been known to breed in captivity under optimal conditions. The male will entice a female into a secluded cave where she lays a spherical egg mass, which the male then fertilizes and diligently guards. The eggs typically hatch in a few days, releasing pelagic larvae. Rearing the larvae requires specialized setups with rotifers and newly hatched artemia nauplii.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Reef safe
- Pseudochromis ammeri can be fiercely territorial and highly aggressive toward small, docile fish, as well as species with similar body shapes like grammas and other dottybacks. They pose a significant threat to small ornamental shrimp, which they will actively hunt and consume. It is best to house them with larger, more robust tank mates that can hold their own. They are considered safe for corals and sessile invertebrates.
- Tankfüllstand
- Middle/Bottom
- They predominantly inhabit the middle to lower regions of the aquarium, closely associating themselves with the rockwork. They rely heavily on caves, crevices, and overhangs for security and will rarely venture far from these hiding spots. They are adept at darting quickly between rocks to patrol their territory. You will often see them poking their heads out of holes to monitor the tank's activity.
