Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, where it dwells in shallow, sunlit waters rich in benthic algae.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, genus Ecsenius. Features a slender body, large eyes, and small nasal cirri. Grows up to 5.0 cm. Belongs to the family Blenniidae. A small, flexible fish with a blunt head, large mobile eyes, and distinctive cirri above the eyes.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and curious, spends time perching on rocks or peering out of small crevices. Usually kept singly. Mostly solitary and territorial over its favorite resting spots on the rocks, where it perches and watches the surrounding area.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The name 'dentex' refers to its well-developed comb-like teeth, perfect for scraping algae. Adult males may develop slightly longer dorsal fin rays and show enhanced coloration during courtship. Coloration consists of orange and brownish longitudinal stripes on a lighter background, with blue dots near the head. No obvious dimorphism.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivore. Provide a diet rich in vegetable matter, including spirulina, nori, and herbivore flakes. Supplement occasionally with mysis and brine shrimp. Primarily herbivorous, feeding on benthic algae. Acceptable foods include spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and frozen artemia or mysis.
Water Quality: Requires stable marine parameters: temperature 22.0-26.0 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Keep water clean and well-circulated: temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and regular water changes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Herbivore. Provide a diet rich in vegetable matter, including spirulina, nori, and herbivore flakes. Supplement occasionally with mysis and brine shrimp. Very peaceful toward different species. Avoid keeping multiple blennies together in small aquariums to prevent territorial clashes.
Aquarium Breeding: Very peaceful with other reef fish; may display territoriality towards other blennies of similar shape. Fully reef-safe. Oviparous. Lays adhesive eggs inside small crevices or empty shells. The male guards the nest until the tiny larvae hatch.
Risks and Diseases: Jump risk when startled. Starvation can occur if the aquarium lacks sufficient algae growth or supplementary feeding. Very hardy and easy to care for. The main risk is their ability to jump out of the aquarium, so a tight-fitting cover is recommended.

- It is generally best to keep a single Dentex blenny per aquarium to avoid conspecific aggression. Males are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their chosen perch from other males. While a mated pair might coexist, establishing a pair is challenging and rarely attempted.
