Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata "Araguaia"

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Araguaia' is a stunning geographic variety collected along the rivers and floodplains of the Araguaia River basin in Brazil. This region is characterized by extreme seasonal water level fluctuations. In nature, it grows in very soft, acidic waters loaded with humic acids and subjected to intense tropical solar radiation, colonizing wet sandbanks and expanding in submerged form during the flooding period.

Taxonomy & Genetics: It belongs to the Onagraceae family and is an established botanical variety of the polymorphic species Ludwigia inclinata. Genetically, it belongs to the verticillata variety, characterized by the arrangement of leaves in dense whorls rather than opposite pairs. Its chromatic expression and narrow leaf shape are genetically coded but require specific environmental parameters to manifest fully in the aquarium.

Physical Structure: In the aquarium, it develops erect, fleshy but delicate stems, about 20-40 cm tall. Submerged leaves are arranged in dense whorls around the stem, having an extremely thin needle-like or linear-lanceolate shape (width of about 1-2 mm and length of 2-3 cm). It develops a fine but dense root system, useful for anchoring the plant in sandy or muddy substrates.

Color & Texture: The leaves present an exceptional coloration that fades from olive-green and yellow-orange in the lower parts to very intense orange-red and purplish-red shades on the growth tips under intense light. The leaf texture is smooth, thin, and soft, giving the entire bush a feathery, light, and airy appearance that sways gently with the water flow.

Lighting & CO2: Requires intense lighting (high LED output) to promote coloration and keep internodes short. CO2 injection (20-30 mg/L) is indispensable to support its rapid growth; without constant carbon dioxide, the plant declines quickly and the tips rot.

Nutrition & Substrate: An active, acidic, and fertile substrate (aquasoil) is of fundamental importance. Liquid fertilization must be constant and complete, providing potassium, chelated iron, and trace elements. It is sensitive to nutrient depletion in the soil.

Water Chemistry: Very demanding: requires soft (KH 0-8 dKH, ideally below 4 dKH) and acidic water (pH 4.5-7.0, ideally below 6.5). The optimal temperature is between 18°C and 30°C, preferring stable temperatures around 24-26°C. It does not tolerate hard water.

Space Management & Placement: Its natural placement is in the midground of the aquarium, or in the background of nano tanks. Individual stems should be planted leaving a distance of at least 2 cm between them to prevent the base from being shaded and losing leaves.

Pruning: Pruning is done by trimming the stems with sharp scissors. This stimulates the production of numerous lateral shoots, densifying the bush. Removed tops can be replanted directly into the substrate to propagate the plant.

Risks & Diseases: The main risk is the necrosis of growth tips due to trace element deficiencies (especially iron and boron) or fluctuations in CO2. Being highly demanding of light, it is susceptible to hair algae if the system is not perfectly balanced.
